At the weekend I went to a pottery painting place with the children

At the next table were 6 adults, (3 couples) and their children, aged between 4 and 7.
The majority of the adults were painting small pieces as well as the kids. One of the women was painting a small , intricate Christmas decoration. She was doing it very carefully and it looked really good.

Towards the end of their time, the kids had finished, and two of the women were still painting, one of the men (I think it was her husband) said in a cutting tone of voice “ Aren’t you embarrassed ? Your son has finished two pieces and you’re still pissing about with that tiny one”

She ignored him, but I saw one of the other couples exchange glances, and I just felt awful for her. It was so condescending, in front of their friends (and her son) ....

My ex husband used to speak to me like that ...it’s not ok, is It?

It's not OK. It demonstrates a real lack of respect.

At least her friends think he's an arse, and they'll hopefully understand and support her when she finally has enough.

YANBU he is a tool

Ttbb · 13/11/2017 20:22

Well I think it's safe to say he's embarrassed himself more than anyone else.

The lack of respect for his wife really struck me, it felt horrible even to watch a stranger behaving this way. I wish she had called him on it ...

YANBU at all. He sounds like an arse!

WhoWants2Know · 13/11/2017 22:03

Do you sort of wish you had called him on it?

FlashTheSloth · 13/11/2017 22:17

He's a twat. If that's how he speaks in public, god knows what he days in private. I'm guessing she didn't react, which shows she is used to it...

lilybetsy · 14/11/2017 11:57

whowants2know yes I do wish I had. I think I would have looked a bit stupid, but his sneering tone and cutting remark upset me, and I wanted his poor wife to know that even a casual observer thought he was a knob

I really feel for you OP, and for her of course. My ex h might have done similar.

I always feel like a want to call EA blokes in public but frankly I"m often scared to. They do tend to turn on you, and I've known passers by to take their side.
