AIBU - those people who use the self scan machines, carefully put their shopping in the packing area, pay and then proceed to stand their placing their stuff in a bag - thus slowing the queue.

Scan and pack
not
scan, place, pack

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgh - drove me mad this morning!

Hmmm I do agree with you in principle but I get a bit stressed at the self scanners and sometimes find it easier to just scan everything first and then I can decide how to pack stuff...sorry!!!

VladmirsPoutine · 11/11/2017 15:52

Yabu. The machines are weighted therefore it would cause an even bigger delay if people bagged as they go.

Rheged · 11/11/2017 15:56

I don’t agree actually. I find it’s much quicker to scan everything and then shove it all in a bag as i’m waiting for my receipt. Trying to get the machine to accept the weight of my shopping bag typically take ages in comparison.

Firesuit · 11/11/2017 16:05

It's not any quicker to pack as you go. You can scan as fast as you can move things across the scanner, that will take just as long whichever way you do things. Packing on the other hand goes quicker when all items are available and can go in in the right order, with no need to rearange. So actually I'd say that scanning first is quicker.

If you have only a couple of items and just drop them into a bag in a heap on top of each other, it makes no difference.

MaggieFS · 11/11/2017 16:14

I know how it's meant to work, but every time I weigh the bag and then scan & bag I get the ruddy 'unexplained item...' and it then takes an age to remedy.
It's quicker in total to scan, place, pay and then bag. Annoying as it is. The machines are crap.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/11/2017 16:17

I use canvas bags for life so even when I tell the machine that I have my own bag it always needs validating by an assistant who takes ages to respond. I therefore scan, pay then put in my bag. I can scan my shopping, tap my credit card and put my items in the bag in the time it often takes an assistant to come over and persuade the checkout to accept my bag!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 11/11/2017 16:18

I do it the way that annoys you, not sorry either & won't change my habit any time soon ever.
Have yet to come across a self serve that doesn't throw a wobbly when you put bags on to be weighed so your way actually isn't quicker.

FluttershysCutieMark · 11/11/2017 16:28

Asda is the only store where I have issues with the bag weight. At tesco I have no problem weighing the bag then packing as I scan. So to me YANBU.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 11/11/2017 16:37

Fucking Asda don’t let you do it the sensible way! You have to set all the stuff on the tray and only after you’ve paid does it screech at you repeatedly to collect your shopping. Hmm

HunterHearstHelmsley · 11/11/2017 16:45

YABU as it's how the bloody things are set up. If I've only got, say, my gym bag then I'm not going to take everything out so the scales will let me use it and I'm not going to pay for a bag.

Never used to happen when they were free!

Anyway, people not knowing how to use them and taking an eternity are more of a problem.

Gramgram · 11/11/2017 16:49

I scan, put the shopping in the packing area, pay and then pack. This is because Sainsbury's self scan don't accept my bag, a bag I actually bought in the store and you always wait an age for the till assistant to come and verify my bag.

So I must really irritate you OP. I'm

Ruffian · 11/11/2017 16:50

I have worked out that if I use my own (plastic) bags and place the first item down quite firmly inside the bag in the bagging area then the system is fine.

If I try to 'verify' my bags first it never works and I hate waiting for the assistant to come - if I'm going to do that I might as well queue at a till.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 16:52

Perhaps they could include using a self scan machine as part of job interviews to see how people react to stress!

Migraleve · 11/11/2017 16:52

This is why I use scan as you shop. Lift item from shelf, scan it, place in bag. Job done ✅

WhoWants2Know · 11/11/2017 17:01

The thought of scanning everything and then packing it has never occurred to me. Seriously, my world is rocked.

MadamPatti · 11/11/2017 17:19

If you want to pack items into a bag that already has items in it (as I frequently do) then you will be unable to pack as you go. Loathe self service. X

cathyclown · 11/11/2017 17:21

I refuse on principle to use them. Job losses you see.

I know it's the way of the future, but I am not buying into it right now. Go to the belt and the cashier every time. I like the interraction, a smile, a nod, a hello too!

Fine if you have one or two items, but more and more people are using them for a weekly shop! NOOOOO

TheHungryDonkey · 11/11/2017 17:22

I do it the way you don’t like it in Sainsbury’s. It’s the only way not to piss off the machine. Once that lary cow gets going there’s no stopping her until assistance turns off. The unexpected items in the bagging area is my pissing shopping that I just scanned, but no it won’t have it.

DumbledoresApprentice · 11/11/2017 17:26

Waitrose and coop round here don’t have scales in the self service. It makes it so much quicker and more efficient. You have a big space to bag as you go along without having to worry about it throwing a wobbly because you add another bag or because someone’s programmed the weight of an item incorrectly on the system.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 11/11/2017 17:29

Tesco near me have just set up scan as you shop. It's great - scan, bag, scan the till code thing, pay and go. So quick and easy. Failing that, an actual person at the normal checkout is also incredibly easy!

Allthewaves · 11/11/2017 18:08

I prefer scan as you shop - easiest way by far. For some reason my local huge sainsbury's doesn't have it.

Spangles1963 · 11/11/2017 18:22

Give me scan as you shop any day. Love it!
