Just seen the economist on facebook saying the advertisers want to pull funding from mumsnet (or are threatening to, apparently...) because we are all too sweary.

So AIBU to think that this is just a piece of shit journalism and that no advertisers would really give a fuck at the actual content of our posts as long as we keep creating it?

Some do, Because the sites they advertise on become the people they associate with.. if for example people started posting a ton of anti Semitic stuff then you'd also get advertisers wanting to pull out

I think advertising on public forums is pretty risky if you are going to clutch your pearls over swearing tbh... I personally wouldn’t want to advertise on some other forums as I’d be mortified to be associated with some of the text speak and general nonsense spouted on them. It’s strange that just swearing (nor racist or anything), has been singled out, (if that’s the case - haven’t seen the original article mentioned in op). I’ve seen worse than swear words on here and elsewhere tbh.

I think swearing online is totally unnecessary.

If advertisers started withdrawing maybe the MNHQ thread police would deal with the very offensive language that is expressed in some threads and stop deleting every third thread because someone reckons it's made up.

There was a whole debate about the use of the c word last week, which I find really horrible and I was glad to see the debate.

Unless what you were advertising was very niche, like nuns' habits, or pearl necklaces specially designed for clutching, you'd probably realise that a large section of your potential market swears and not give a flying fuck about whether sites on which you advertise allow members to say cunt or not.

Does the National Trust realise the majority of it's patrons are the most likely to swear - at least in the correct manner and with emphasis. Instead of just calling some old lady on the bus a cunt. You don't get too many fuckwits being able to afford NT passes to be fair. Thank the fucking lord.

You can not enjoy swearing yourself and not be a pearl clutcher, but if it genuinely shocks or distresses you to hear or read any swear words then I would probably say you are a little bit pearl clutchy.

There are swear words in some of the most amazing movies and novels I’ve read. It must be really hard to enjoy them, if you are someone who really can’t abide swearing. That said, I don’t like poor swearing. Some people just don’t do it properly imo and then it’s not nice.

Ah. That's the problem. People think that those of us who don't like swearing very much are shocked or distressed by it. When actually I, for one, just think it's boring and show offy. And bad mannered.

This forum is not very sweary when you compare it to the Thick of It or the tax avoiding show called Mrs Browns Boys.

I don’t like swearing, I hardly ever swear (apart from the word shit every now and again), and I do think there’s too much of it on mumsnet, though it doesn’t stop me enjoying it.

When I see c--- being used quite so liberally without any idea of how it can actually be used to enhance a sentence, it reminds me of Year 1 children who like to use 'poo', Year 4s who think 'sex' is hilarious or 11 year-olds who think saying 'fuck' is shocking and cool.

I always assume that people like the OP spend their days saying 'darn it' and watching CBeebies and think a little swearing on a parenting forum is a last chance of rebellion or excitement.
