To spend £100 on a dehumidifier

We just bought a house that needs a bit of work. The windows aren't great to be honest but we can't afford to get them done until after everything else is done.

When we get up in the morning our bedroom windows are soaking. I mean soaking! I don't want to cause mould. We open the windows but they are that wet it takes ages for them to dry and we have to wipe down with kitchen roll and towels.

We have a tumble dryer we use rather than hanging clothes up too.
I was thinking of getting a decent dehumidifier to combat the problem but not sure if they are worth the money.
Opinions?

Dehumidifiers are, in my experience, amazing! Infact, I have just turned mine on as our house gets really bed condensation on the windows and just a general feeling of ‘dampness’. The one I have just switched on is over 20 years old and pinched from my mum! It’s been on since this morning and the windows are already dry. Also, during winter it makes the house seem just that bit warmer too. I can’t see the one we have lasting much longer because it’s so ancient but the minute it packs in I’ll be off to buy a new one!

They are brilliant and worth the money BUT we couldn't sleep through the noise of it in our bedroom. We use it now to dry laundry in the spare room.

We used to wipe the windows down with a squeegee (as well as opening them as much as possible). We also bought some of that plastic double glazing film - sticks on with double-sided tape and you use a hairdryer to shrink it to fit. That stopped the wet windows, but obviously the moisture is still coming from somewhere, so you need to keep the room aired.

Have finally got double glazing so fingers crossed this winter is easier!

Definitely worth the money this time of year. Also satisfying when you pour the water away, amazing how much accumulates in a short period of time.

We used to live in a flat with really, really bad damp (mold up the walls yuckness). Our dehumidifier was the best thing ever. We would leave it on in the bedrooms during the day and it would really dry things out. Also, as others have said, they are great for drying washing. We got ours from Argos for under £100, but it was some time ago. I would absolutely recommend you get one.

We have one upstairs and downstairs, makes a massive difference with the wetness of the windows in the winter. Also have a Karcher window vac which is really good.
Honestly couldn’t cope without the dehumidifier, it dries washing overnight.

Ours is fab

Dries laundry overnight

Haven’t checked in detail but i suspect it costs us nothing to run too, as the house feels warmer so we don’t need the heating on so much. Certainly makes life more pleasant.

I love my dehumidifier! I use it to dry laundry in the hot press. It’s not noisy either. It’s a delonghi and was around £120 at Argos a few years ago.

Definitely worth it.
We live in Asia where it's hot and humid for most of the year.
Our dehumidifier is an absolute works horse. We couldn't live without it.
Great for drying clothes, the apartment and keeping mould away.
£100 is a bargain. Because of high demand for them here they are expensive. Some over £500 and more .

When we do come back to the UK I will be buying one.

You won't regret it.

Mine switches itself on and off depending on the moisture levels in the air so it’s always on at the plug but not constantly running.

boopsy I leave mine overnight and have had no problems. However, I don’t known if that is recommended or not.

I hardly use my tumble dryer since we’ve had tbe dehumidifiers so I hope it all evens out. I’m sure tumble dryers must use more electricity.

We have one and use it loads in winter. I also recommend the Karcher window vac. Makes quick work of the windows of a morning.

People here in Asia say they're not meant to be used when you are home. Although I've seen plenty of places where they are humming away with people about - especially in swimming pool changing rooms.

I put mine on during the day when we all go out to work. Not sure that's particularly safe either as there have been a few accidents of some going up in smoke. Shock

Mine stands in the living room with plenty of ventilation.

Yanbu, run it overnight on Economy 7 electricity and use a surge protector.

I get it OP.

it was a nice idea for a gift but definitely not for a surprise gift. You needed to be onboard before they bought it.

I’d be honest with db, along the lines suggested upthread.‘it’s a lovely gift, but we just can’t manage the logistics, do want the tickets back or shall I sell them and refund‘

Or you could tell a white lie..

Bad back (you or DH) and can’t travel/ stand/ sit for that long

Already booked something on that night (shame it got cancelled near the time)

I have two running in my basement as needed. They don't use much elec.

One of them has a hose so it's self emptying.

Since we've had them we've had no problems with things going mouldy, whereas before everything in the basement had to be thrown away.

Mine doesn’t cost a lot in electricity. I can’t temember exact usage but it’s low.

We have a ebac, it's brilliant. It's normally left on all the time but on auto so only starts running when there is a certain amount of moisture in the air.

Don't need it so much here but in our previous house it was a godsend. It was running almost constantly what with cooking, showers and drying washing but made a huge difference in the amount of condensation. House was easier to warm as well. Didn't notice the electric bill go up so not expensive to run, especially considering it meant we could have the heating on lower.

Ours was £250. Did a fair amount of research and read reviews before going for an Ebac and then picked the one that was suitable for the size of our house.
