AIBU about leaf blowers?

Tuileries · 27/10/2017 09:02

Several times a week, I hear people using leaf blowers for hours at a time, sometimes right up until the early evening. Yesterday somebody was using one constantly to the point I was close to tears from the noise. This morning it's started again already. I work from home a lot and there is no way to shut out the noise.

For anyone who doesn't know what they sound like, here is a video:

AIBU to think they are a noise nuisance and wonder what happened to a good old-fashioned broom? Angry

YANBU.
Our next door neighbour starts using theirs at 8am (not great on the one weekday when I can have a lie in).

Why has someone made a recording of 12 hours of leaf blower noise?

Tuileries · 27/10/2017 09:17

To annoy their neighbours when they tire of actual leaf blowing?

The church opposite our house employs someone that uses one a lot. My DCs and I watched him once blowing a single leaf back and forth across the steps. My kids thought it was hilarious (in a runaway leaf kind of way, can't catch me). I thought "FFS pick the damn thing up."

ethelfleda · 27/10/2017 09:30

Not only that but they seem completely pointless to me!

woosey35 · 27/10/2017 09:30

Omg this is my absolute pet hate!! I despise them!! My neighbour uses his for a 7hr stint every week!! Even when we had the storm last week, he was sucking up leaves!! He could’ve just held a bin bag open and watched them drop in!! Awful awful noise that’s numbs your brain!!
I’m with you OP, they should be banned!!

StorminaBcup · 27/10/2017 09:32

I don’t see the point either. My neighbour across the road used to spend a few hours blowing all of the leaves into a pile by the side of the road and then a car would come past and blow them all back on his drive. Utterly futile. Get a broom and dust pan.

Yes! This is what I see. I'm sure it's because the professional gardeners I see doing it are paid by the hour Hmm

Totally agree op what a useless peice of equipment and time.

Leaves everywhere now but whether you blow them, pile them up or leave them alone they are all gone by April. Grin

guiltynetter · 27/10/2017 10:02

yes, i hate this. i think they are pointless. i used to think they were like a vacuum but since i’ve found out they only blow the leaves around i think they’re even more rubbish!

Theresamayscough · 27/10/2017 10:03

Well exactly if they sucked them up I could understand that but why blow them elsewhere when the wind can do that job quite efficiently Grin

Doobigetta · 27/10/2017 10:09

YANBU. The house next door but one to us has people leaf blowing at least three times a week for hours at a time, all year round. Other neighbours are nearly as bad. It's the actual nature of the noise as well- because the pitch and volume varies constantly, you can neve shut it out. And it's SO loud- if you have a window open even a crack they drown out normal conversation, or the tv. One day I WILL snap and blow one of their faces off.
Of course, because it's only a problem for people who live on roads with lots of trees and open spaces, it's the ultimate first world problem and no-one else gives a fuck, but I've got to the point where I hate those leaf-blowing cunts with a passion.

papayasareyum · 27/10/2017 10:14

I bought a leaf blower and only used it once because the noise it made was astoundingly loud and a massive nuisance to everyone including me. Awful.

Slimthistime · 27/10/2017 10:19

Ought to be a law...
Can't abide the damn things.

Slimthistime · 27/10/2017 10:20

Not at all a first world problem btw

I live a tiny flat and the guy in the house next door uses one. Yes the garden is small, he just likes the noise.
