AIBU to think that cat groups on Facebook should get their facts right before they go round spouting rubbish. I had to take my 17 month old cat to the vets today because I thought their was something seriously wrong with her because she wants using her back legs turns out it's just her first ever season the vet said to take her in when it's finished and they will spay her and my youngest kitten can be done at 6 months old. This girl from a cat group told me that the vet is wrong and old fashioned and that cats should be done at 4 months old. I would like to think that a trained vet with years of experience knows more than some cat warrior.

So why are you listening to some cat warrior you don't have to post on Facebook you know

Different vets will give different answers, so people in the groups will do the same.

I didn't post about it she messaged me but I would like to think that a trained vet would know more than them. They use scare tactics to get people to agree with what they believe which I don't agree with you can't frighten people in to getting cats spayed and neutered and I think it's up to the owner to decide when their cat is ready for an operation.

All the people I know say 6 months and the vet who did my male cat last year said 6 months.

It's better to get them done sooner so they can go out - there is no need to wait until they are 6 months

It depends on the cat and the breed it also depends on envromental factors. My cat is 17 months old and only just having her 1st season.

My vet says 6 months as well. We always kept the kittens indoors until this time.

Cats protection do recommend 4 months, because they sexually mature around 4/5 months. I agree that you may need a second opinion

Ideally 6 months but neutering is regularly done from 4 months for strays especially. It's much better to have them spayed a little too early than have to go through a pregnancy and have a litter before they're fully grown

Females can be done from 4 months and males even sooner!

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have been doing neutering from 4 months for some time - it’s a newer take on ideal time to neuter. I’m sure neither are wrong, but that your bet is more old school.

My cat came to me from the RSPCA already speyed at 12 weeks. When I got my other cat the vet refused to spey her until 6 months though I wanted it done sooner.

All vets recommend different things I think.

I wouldn't leave a cat I wasn't planning to breed from unspayed for any longer than necessary. I've never heard of not using back legs being a symptom of a season. How odd.

My cat only vet also says 6 months, at least for my breed who are slow to mature. But they are also indoor only so less problematic

They don't have to have a season first.

Makes sense to have them neutered asap if they are outdoor cats.

I will be getting a 2nd opinion because I don't really trust the opinion of someone who isn't a trained vet. She will be getting taken in for the operation as soon as her season ends. I just don't think someone who runs a Facebook group should be calling a vet old fashioned for saying 6 months old. I have no idea why my cat is so late though.

Late to spay. Not late to have a season. Our vet just wanted them to be a certain weight before they could be spayed.
Even indoor cats escape!

It depends on the professional...some cats are done very young indeed now. I'm sure it's better for them to mature a bit, but being neutered before their first season completely eliminates the risk of a litter. Leaving it until 6 months - could be too late if the cat gets outside to party with the local toms!

wolfiefan I thought she'd had a stroke the way she was acting so I rushed her to the vets just to be told that she's in season. I have never ever seen a cat act the way she did it shocked me.

It is generally 4 months now, however it's dependent on the weight of the cat, so if they are small for their ages, you need to wait a little longer.

That must've really shocked you. Why wasn't she spayed earlier though? Didn't vets recommend it?
