Every time I get books out the uni library someone has always underlined stuff or, even worse, written comments in the margin. Some of them even do it in biro

AIBU to think all these people should have painful punishments inflicted upon them

I don't care about their opinions. I don't want to see what they thought was interesting/useful about the book. I don't want to be distracted by the lines they draw that obscure the stuff I actually want to read.

SO AIBU (apparently my friends at uni think I'm a little overzealous about this).

But argh

I've heard about the archives. Places in which you are only allowed to use a pencil. They sound like wondrous places.

Never have the time to visit though so use Early English BOoks Online instead (as can do it at home).

Always wanted to be an archivist, but got put off by one who came to see us about careers and said there was so few jobs we shouldn't bother, plus we'd all get bad backs.

If they want others to see their thoughts they should do the hard work themselves and write a flippin' book!

my dad once found a rasher of bacon in a library book...

chocolattegirl · 12/04/2007 22:44

GgE what did he do with it? Did he eat it?

I once used a (full) book of 1st-class stamps as a bookmark but luckily I always shake the books before I hand them over .

No jobs?? OK, fewer jobs than librarians, but far fewer qualified archivists. And you get to work with original manuscripts (while telling everyone else to keep orf ). No Access Without Reading and Agreeing to The Rules, anyway.

And my back is fine

RustyBear · 12/04/2007 23:14

My SIL was an archivist - and yes, she has a bad back!

The OAP incident was back in my life BC - must be nearly 25 years ago now - so the OAP is probably no longer with us....
