To be surprised at how much Coronation Street has deteriorated

I stopped being a regular viewer years and years ago. But I watched an episode tonight because I'm staying with my mum and couldn't believe how trashy and one dimensional it's become. Where's the humour and the grittiness and the lovable reality of so many of the characters. It was just cheap, tacky melodrama and poor acting.

AIBU to think CS is way past its heyday and has strayed very far from its roots?

I still like it. Some of it is farcical but it is a soap opera. I find the people who say they've gone off it and 'being old style back' usually crave more Norris and Rita and Mary and harmless hi jinx like Eccles running off with Ken'a slippers, whereas none of that appeals to me and I much prefer the gritty storylines dealing with real life issues. Over the years I've been particularly impressed with their portrayal of peter's alcoholism and the recent Bethany sex trafficking storyline was phenomenally acted and portrayed. I don't cry easily yet I did when she got the guilty verdicts. So yeah, still a big Corrie fan but know loads of people on social media ATM are making it clear they're turning it off

YANBU. It's a bit shit now sadly.

The people in it ONLY date people on the street, they ONLY work on the street, they ONLY socialise on the street, all relatives live ONLY on the street. It is really fucking stupid. It may have been (somewhat) like this 60 years ago when it started, but life and society is nothing like this now.

And don't even get me STARTED on how new extended family members keep crawling out of the woodwork, that have never been mentioned before - ever. I mean, FFS, how many more CONNORS are we going to be subjected to? And how come people seem to pull £100K out of their arse to buy the pub/the bistro/the factory? Really stupid.

Eastenders is worse.

Stopped watching that 5 years ago. I have tried to watch it a few times since, but it's dire. Corrie is going the same way.

I still watch it though, coz I have done for 30 years, and it's like a habit! And I am hoping it will improve. There have been a few OK storylines, but overall it's a bit shit.

It's nostalgia that keeps me watching it.

There have been some well written and well acted storylines (Bethany's grooming and rape, Michelle's stillborn baby) but a lot of it is trite and unrealistic. And it's true tat almost everyone of working age has a job in one of the businesses on the street. I think that Billy, Gary and Brian are the exceptions. And everyone except Audrey lives on the street with the exception of a couple of new characters.

I think that Mary and her daughter in law will have some good scenes soon.

I watched it the other day. Reminded me of Crossroads (without the charm). Wooden acting. Wooden scripts.

But the acting. Terrible.

Yes, I was shocked at how bad some of the acting was. Not to mention the clunky script.
