it was a significant birthday this weekend. i've been married to dh for 15 years. we don't live near his family, but he made the effort to visit them whilst working nearby a few weeks back. they made a big deal about him bringing back a present for my birthday for me. he said it was probably jewellery by the size and shape of the gift and that they had all chipped in for it. it sat on the side looking at me for 2 weeks. i opened it and it's a bar of green and black's chocolate. aibu to be upset that they made no effort whatsoever? for previous birthdays his parents alone have given me a £20 gift card, so its weird that between 6 working adults they've managed a £1.50 bar of chocolate, right? i'm hiding my disappointment for dh's sake.

Yeah that's tight as fuck. How many of them 'chipped in'?

KindergartenKop · 15/10/2017 20:32

If it helps, my in laws sometimes buy me jewellery but have awful/different taste so they spend loads on stuff I won't wear. It makes me very sad.

lookatyourwatchnow · 15/10/2017 20:33

That is so bad that it is almost funny. 6 adults chipped in for a bar of chocolate?

Passive aggressive gushing thank you cards??

WhooooAmI24601 · 15/10/2017 20:34

Is it some kind of ridiculous joke where they actually bought something lovely but test you with a shite gift first to be hilarious and daring in their frolics?

If not, LTB. They're fuckers and he's the biggest one of all.

Handsfull13 · 15/10/2017 20:36

Yanbu
What did your DH say about it? Surely he should be embarrassed

OrangePeels · 15/10/2017 20:36

Is it someone else's birthday around now too? Could they have given you the wrong present by mistake? Shock

StickThatInYourPipe · 15/10/2017 20:36

Have you opened it? Not tying to get your hopes up or anything but could it be a trick?

fuzzyfozzy · 15/10/2017 20:36

I'm hoping there's something inside the wrapper....

Appuskidu · 15/10/2017 20:37

What the fuck?! What does your DH say about it. I would have to get him to ring them and ask about it.

I presume they do actually like you, you/DH get them nice gifts, there's no massive back story and you haven't fallen out?

mumtoanangel · 15/10/2017 20:37

Surely they are joking and there's a real present somewhere.if not that's just a p take

Missstickinthemud · 15/10/2017 20:37

Is there any chance part of it could have gone missing? It seems weird that they made such a fuss about him bringing that back.

Maybe you can get in touch to say thank you and say "Thank you for my lovely bar of Green and Blacks chocolate" and see if they mention anything.

gamerchick · 15/10/2017 20:37

What did your bloke say when he saw what it was?

washingmachinefastwash · 15/10/2017 20:38

Was there a gift card in the wrapping and it’s been chucked out by accident?

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 15/10/2017 20:40

What was your DH reaction?

Tankerdale · 15/10/2017 20:41

Missing the point but struggling to picture how you could mistake a bar of choc for a jewelry box -I could spot green & blacks a mile off but then I eat it quite a lot-

Stressalot42 · 15/10/2017 20:42

I’m with the ....something extra in the wrapper?

Or it’s a “clue”..... for example green and blacks was founded in London and they’ve got you a weekend in London?

Hopeful

Appuskidu · 15/10/2017 20:43

But a wrapped bar of chocolate wouldn't feel or look anything like a jewellery box?!

seven201 · 15/10/2017 20:43

What did your dh say?

Bluelonerose · 15/10/2017 20:48

How big was the bar if 6 people have chipped in? Grin

Groovee · 15/10/2017 20:48

Thank got Viennese truffles for my 30th but I had asked for them. It seems incredibly tight to get a bar of green and blacks.

SnowiestMountain · 15/10/2017 20:49

No! That can’t be it! Was it with anything else? Is there a card with something in? Is it a clue? That’s dreadful if it’s really all there is Sad

KeepItAsItIs · 15/10/2017 20:50

What? Surely your DH was also wondering what the hell was going on? Why does it take 6 adults to chip in for a bloody bar of chocolate?!

SteampunkPrincess · 15/10/2017 20:51

is there something in the wrapper OP?

if not - ask DH how 6 adults had to group together to afford it and if you need to start sending them food parcels?

SteampunkPrincess · 15/10/2017 20:51

seriously - dont hide your disappointment,.....!

Pi55ed0ff · 15/10/2017 20:52

it's a normal sized bar. nothing hidden inside (dh and dc ate it this afternoon - i didn't want any of it). card sent separately in the post, nothing inside. nothing else in the gift bag or packaging.

haven't fallen out, nothing i can think of.

dh thinks they're kind for remembering the sort of chocolate i like (i actually prefer aldi's chocolate). he would walk over hot coals rather than have anyone criticise his family, no not much point saying anything to him.
