Hi

Been in Blackpool today. Really wanted to get my fortune told but didn’t.

Has anyone ever been to a fortune teller on the pier or the main walk and they have been any good?

Curiosity as going again in a couple of weeks

Martin,

It makes you look like a complete turnip and as you can see (and I'm sure you are lapping up) it riles people up and makes you a laughing stock.

But you knew that.

SWALK,
BC

SabineUndine · 15/10/2017 03:04

He is a serial attention-seeker, not nearly as pleasant or useful as a turnip.

"'Manners maketh man', as someone said.
He's the 'hero' of the day
It takes a (wo)man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say".

Be yourself Mr MJD, no matter what they we say.

Cheers,
Mrs W. TIS

Most Mediums rely on the Forer effect /barnum statements and confirmation bias.

For example the DH who was told about the babies. (sorry to use this as an example)

It would be very interesting to know what was actually said. Did the Medium say "I see that you lost two babies at only a few days old" or something more generic that could apply to most people. For example l "you've suffered great loss" (Barnum Statement) and DH confirms this by saying "yes" and medium goes on to say "this person or people were very close to you" etc

And also how many statements did the medium make that were incorrect? Confirmation Bias will ignore the 9 incorrect statements and focus on the 1 correct one to confirm that the Medium was genuine.

i went to see a tarot card reader years ago i cant remember anything paticular that stood out, he told my friend she would marry the man she was with at hat time she did and that they would have two kids they didnt and he didnt mention the two kids she already had.

00100001 · 15/10/2017 11:10

I don't think that's actually fair crisp
Some people genuinely believe they are a Medium and want to help people.
It's the same with any profession. It snot fair (for example) to call all plumbers cowboys because you had 5 bad ones who deliberately poked holes in the pipes to get more work iyswim?

Roomba · 15/10/2017 11:10

I sat in on my ex FIL seeing one. It was hilarious and I struggled to keep a straight face. Ex FIL thought it was utter crap too (he's a Professor in a university science department) but we were both curious after reading the Derren Brown book about how you can use statements which apply to 9/10s of people but get them to think you have some great insight into them personally, also cold reading techniques.

Bless her, she did try hard while ex FIL kept his face completely impassive and gave very little away - 'You have a daughter' ('No I don't have a daughter) 'Well, someone like a daughter to you then, a wife maybe? I sense a feminine presence' ('Nope. Not married'), 'It could be a sister?' ('I have no sisters'), 'Well this person is like a sister to you. You feel that way about her sometimes', ('Er...no still can't think of who that could be').. Almost everything she said was floundering guesswork. It was excruciating. To top it all off she told him she saw financial success for him over the next year - he got made redundant and ended up very close to bankruptcy instead.

It has to be rubbish. But I also have friends who have been and swore they were very cynical about the whole thing until they were told specific names, events, things no one could have known. There are some very good cold readers out there I guess.

I loved Hillary Mantel' novel about the world of a medium - it is called 'Beyond Black' and is excellent.

x2boys · 15/10/2017 11:13

i think if you go and take everything said with a big barrell of salt i would actually expect to be told anything amazing.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 15/10/2017 11:17

It's all utter bollocks.

Anyone who had this 'gift' would be living the high life after 'seeing' the winning lottery numbers.

They would be a scientific marvel and their brains would be getting looked at.

Imho, the only people that go to psychics are women who are single and want to be told the man of their dreams is round the corner, or worse, someone who has lost a loved one and wants a message to know they're okay.

To charge someone for this privilege, if they had this 'gift', would be twisted AF.

x2boys · 15/10/2017 11:23

i wouldnt actually expect*

Crispsheets · 15/10/2017 11:27

Sorry it is fair.

specialsubject · 15/10/2017 11:31

What did mjd say that wasn't true?

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 15/10/2017 11:37

I saw a medium for a laugh when pregnant, wasn't at Blackpool though.

My god was it excruciating.
She first informed Me I was expecting a child in the near future...
(I think my 8 month baby bump helped)
That it would be a boy or a girl
(Damn, I was hoping for a potato)
She could sense I wasn't happy
(Wonder if she meant the reading she gave me)

And then rattled of a few numbers that have a significance or will do. She also predicted two numbers will be my future child's date of birth. She was really and truly wrong.

Callaird · 15/10/2017 11:55

Agree not to go if you are feeling emotional or want to get in touch with someone recently passed..

My friends took me about 6 months after my partner died, it was horrendous, I've never been a believer so not sure why I went. I was wearing his ring on my ring finger and she told me that we were going to have a baby and have a long and happy life together blah blah blah, she told me that an elderly female relation was looking after me, my guardian angel, that she is always with me, of course at 45 I had lost both my grandmothers however neither of them were elderly when they died 46 and 62 and both taken suddenly.

I obviously didn't mention my boyfriend and I guess hoped that he'd come through as it was a sudden death and still such a shock, wanted forgiveness for not being there to save him and that he didn't feel any pain or was scared.

She tried everything, palm reading, tarot cards, something to do with my aura, laying on of hands, dice, after 17 minutes of a 30 minute session, she said I can't help you and told me to leave!!

My friends had their readings as found great comfort in it!!

DayThree3 · 15/10/2017 12:24

My fortune came true. At the time I said it would never happen

CockacidalManiac · 15/10/2017 12:36

If they were any good, they’d be world famous.
They certainly wouldn’t have to live in fucking Blackpool.

FreeMeNow · 15/10/2017 12:45

Day what happened?

I'm pretty sure that all these Smiths/Petulengro women haven't all had the gift. Apparently Queen Victoria was a customer Grin
