Cold caller incompetence

We moved into our house at the beginning of 2007. We're now 10.5 years later and we're STILL getting cold calls for the previous occupants. AIBU to think that if a company isi SO incompetent that they are working on a list which is more than a decade old they don't deserve to be in business??

(And before anyone asks why we're even answering, we don't have caller ID on the phone and elderly parents who don't "do" mobiles)

Can you get a fresh number from BT? I find it infuriating that we get so many, despite being registered with TPS. Also BT want £5 per month for blocking up to ten numbers - mobiles do it for free! I don't think cold callers care who answers the phone. I tell them they have the wrong number and they still have a go Angry

CuckooClockChimes · 14/10/2017 12:03

I agree, can't you get a new number?

RosiePosieRosie · 14/10/2017 12:05

Go and register with the telephone preference service and you won’t get cold calls

BitchQueen90 · 14/10/2017 12:08

I'm a cold caller. All I do is get given a list of data and call the numbers on it. I hate getting cold calls myself so I understand it's frustrating but I literally have no idea where the data comes from, my boss just gives it me and I call it.

Also if you're registered with TPS then it's their job to make sure your data doesn't get to us, that's what they are paid for. My calls don't get through to people who are with TPS and if they do there's some issue at that end.

centreyourself · 14/10/2017 12:08

Crackle crackle, buzz, chattering and giggling to mates in background ... “erm, hello is that Professor Popcorn? Sorry I mean Reverend ... erm ... Countess ...Mr Popcorn

Then they wonder why you hang up.

Tainbri · 14/10/2017 12:08

rosie we are registered with TPS and it makes zero difference especially as most calls are withheld numbers from abroad. Sad

AndrewJames · 14/10/2017 12:13

It's annoying, yes. But please don't be a dick to the actual callers, they are just doing their min wage job as they are told to do it, there is no need to be horrible to them.
Complain to the companies if you want, not the poor fucker on the phone.

daisypond · 14/10/2017 12:19

I never answer the phone when it rings. I let it go to answering machine and then I can hear who it is and then pick up, or not.

ratspeaker · 14/10/2017 12:24

Ask the companies to remove your number from their database
Register with tps.
Tell each cold caller this after getting a note of the company name .

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 14/10/2017 12:35

Sorry Bitch - it is actually up to the company calling to make sure their database lists exclude TPS. It is not up to TPS. Their role is to provide data lists.

I am registered with TPS and report companies both to them and to ICO who call me against my express and legal wishes not to be cold called.

Fanciedachange17 · 14/10/2017 12:36

We get them at work although we are signed up with TPS. Sometimes I'm really nice and sympathise (I've been hung up on for this!) sometimes I just hang up or otherwise I'll say the first thing that comes into my head; using a Russian accent I'll ramble on about the owner being in prison, sued for incompetence or whatever takes my fancy. I'm not nasty.

Apologies. When I call numbers that are TPS registered I cannot get through, I get an automated message telling me they are TPS registered so why does this not happen with all numbers?

I always remove numbers from my data if the caller asks me to.

BitchQueen90 · 14/10/2017 12:45

Unfortunately though sometimes we get given duplicate data. So someone else in the office has the same data and are calling the same people. Complain about the company if you wish but it's not the fault of the person calling you, we're just doing what we get paid to.

MiniMum97 · 14/10/2017 12:59

BitchQueen90 Sorry you don’t know what you are talking about. It’s not the TPS’s job to make sure data doesn’t get to you, it’s a company’s responsibility to run their lists past the TPS list and take out anyone who is on the TPS list.

It is the telephone number that is listed so you should not be getting calls if your number is on the list. If the companies are in the UK (TPS won’t apply to overseas companies) start getting some details and make a complaint. See below...

I live my sky photo, if it's an unrecognised number it asks who's calling and you choose whether to accept the call or not. Within days Al cold calls had stopped.

PoppyPopcorn · 14/10/2017 13:27

A lot of the cells do appear to originate from overseas where threats of OFCOM or TPS m an nothing.

I have never bought anything after being cold called by a company I have no prior connection with and quite honestly don’t understand why anyone ever would.

This week I’ve been plagued with “international” calls with 02 or 01 codes. I did answer once or twice but there was no one there. It has happened 10-15 times Mon to Fri but none today. Anything to be done?

BigMumma1245 · 14/10/2017 14:30

My calls don't get through to people who are with TPS and if they do there's some issue at that end.

Is that what your boss tells you, @BitchQueen90? Because they're talking bollocks, and if you repeat that to the people you call, you're talking bollocks
