To attend a Dental Appointment with a cold

Is it unreasonable to visit a Dentist or Hygienist if you have an obvious cold?

Is it unreasonable for a Dentist or Hygienist to refuse to treat you and ask you to rebook after your cold has cleared up?

Depends how bad the cold. If not too bad, a spritz of Otrivine and you should be fine.

If proper blocked nose, snotty, sneezing etc.,then surely the sensible thing would be to reschedule. More comfortable for the patient as well.

A lot of dentists won't treat patients with a blocked nose (because you might not always be able to breathe through your mouth during a procedure) and most won't if you have a cold sore.

A quick check up I wouldn't imagine to be a problem but if you're getting treatment with a bad cold going on then you might struggle to breathe during it so I guess they would refuse. I'd probably reschedule.

bogofeternalstench · 06/10/2017 18:27

I've had two teeth extracted today with a stinking cold so if it is unreasonable then I am! My dentist did ask if I wanted to reschedule but didn't raise any objections when I said I was fine to go ahead.

Just got the dry socket to look forward to now. With all the sneezing and coughing I'm doing it seems inevitable. :(

I cancelled my appointment with the hygienist the other day because of my cold. Can't think of nothing worse than having dental treatment all bunged up.

deepestdarkestperu · 06/10/2017 20:27

Unless you were desperate, I wouldn’t want to go to the dentist with a cold! I can’t imagine lying back in the dentists chair with a bunged up nose being much fun for anyone.

I don’t think a dentist would be unreasonable to cancel.

LIZS · 06/10/2017 20:28

I would cancel, unpleasant enough without a runny or stuffy nose, let alone the infectious nature of it.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 06/10/2017 20:28

I would reschedule if it was a routine appointment and a bad cold.
If it was urgent, eg bad tooth ache, I would still go.
If it was just a sniffle I would still go.

I'm a dentist. A cold wouldn't bother me. A cold sore definitely would. I had a patient once get really annoyed when I refused to treat her with a cold sore
