To phone in sick to work now?

I work for a homeless shelter and have had horrendous stomach cramps and diahorea for a good few days. I was very ill again about an hour ago and know I will not be well enough to work (Nor would it be responsible to come in). I am thinking it might be better to call in now and tell them. Would this be ok?

Yes, if there is someone there then it's better to tell them in advance . Hope you're better soon.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 01/10/2017 11:03

I was just reading your other thread. Definitely call in now. There's no way you should be going in in the next 48 hours.

Hope you feel better soon.

InspMorse · 01/10/2017 11:04

If you have diahorea you don't go to work! You don't even need to ask! 😄

MatildaTheCat · 01/10/2017 11:04

Yes, call now. Just imagine how bad you'd feel if you passed on the bug to a vulnerable homeless person.

Get well soon.

InspMorse · 01/10/2017 11:05

At least 48 hrs... they'll appreciate the notice.

Thingywhatsit · 01/10/2017 11:12

Do you have an oncall manager? And do you have bank staff they will call to cover your shift? If so - yes ring now so they can sort out cover for tomorrow.

Don't think spreading your bug around the shelter will be appreciated. Although it's more likely that you will spread it around the other staff than your clients!

FindingNemoandDory · 01/10/2017 11:14

Definitely

You can then also relax and concentrate on getting better

Hope you feel better soon

Foslady · 01/10/2017 11:16

Ring now and GP onthe morning - just re readyour other thread and certainly sounds like food poisoning

JennyBlueWren · 01/10/2017 11:19

Always better to give more notice if you can so that they can try to arrange cover.

ssd · 01/10/2017 11:28

call them now and hope you feel better soon

Sienna333 · 01/10/2017 11:48

Tried calling but nobody picking up. When they finally did, I was talking but nearly in tears and my voice was cracking, they couldn't hear me and so put the phone down. What a bloody idiot :(

OP posts:
ssd · 01/10/2017 12:20

phone them back, they will be worried sick about you

take your time and just say you feel really rubbish, then can you go back to bed?

you poor soul x

Sienna333 · 01/10/2017 12:33

They don't give 2 monkeys, still not answering the bloody phone. Sitting here in tears. I emailed as well, still no response

OP posts:
ssd · 01/10/2017 12:40

then you have tried, its all you can do

save your email and if they say anything you can show them a print out of it

if they arent doing their job it isnt your fault

Sienna333 · 01/10/2017 12:50

I just got through. The guy I spoke to didn't seem bothered at all and am a bit concerned at his lack of response. He said he will make a note of it but I am not convinced he will. Am expecting a phone call to ask where I am in the morning.
I will keep a copy of the email and I have texted another colleague on duty to let her know as well but no response. I have done my part though, right? Anxiety is playing with my head now about an angry call tomorrow.

OP posts:
midsummabreak · 01/10/2017 12:52

Get well soon. Hope you are OK

midsummabreak · 01/10/2017 12:56

Im sure workwill be glad they are not dealing with same illness. Best to wait 48 hours since last diarrhea

Sienna333 · 01/10/2017 13:01

Believe me, they won't want me nowhere near them. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy

OP posts:
ssd · 01/10/2017 17:21

I suffer from anxiety too, I know how you feel.

Get better soon.

Sienna333 · 03/10/2017 15:50

Need to call in again as had bad diahorea attacks over night and this morning. Been ok since 12PM and (so far) managed to hold down some dry cereal but I know I am still contagious so need to call in sick for rest of the week. They were fine last time if disinterested but it will probably be someone different on other end of the phone and it is sending my anxiety high :(

OP posts:
ssd · 03/10/2017 20:02

sienna, I'm saying this very gently, but you being so anxious about calling into work as you are sick is making me wonder if it might be worth a trip to the dr to discuss your anxiety?

Sienna333 · 03/10/2017 20:52

I already do SSD. I think to be fair though, this is a common anxiety

OP posts:
ssd · 03/10/2017 21:51

thats good you have something

anxiety is a total bugger, I've always had it.
