Vehicle tracking and my employer

Hi all

Posting here for traffic.

I have a company vehicle - a lease car from a lease company they use for employees who have a company car. It’s a four year lease if this makes any difference.

Appreciate the lease company will have installed a tracker for their information incase the car gets stolen.

Are my employers allowed to request access to my whereabouts on specific days or is this protected by the data protection act.

I’m not doing anything wrong or being anywhere I shouldn’t I’m just trying to settle an argument with a friend.

They're allowed to access the tracking data if you're on company business but not when you're using the car for personal use. In practice it means if they want to use the data the tracker has to have a privacy setting that you can trigger for private use.

I should also add that if a tracker is installed and your company will have access to the data you should be told. If the tracker is only for theft prevention/recovery then you don't have to be told.

I had a company lease plan car with a tracker ,it monitored driving style and location etc.It would email your manager weekly on the vehicle movements (inc time and location).I was given a report monthly like a statement and I had to mark down which clients I was visiting. It showed time I started the engine journey duration and point to point postcodes. All private journeys were loved and I had to write private mileage (even out of work house journeys / weekends ) they said it was because we had fuel cards and they deducted the private miles off the fuel card spend and th eprivqte miles £ were taken from my wages .As the fuel card was used to fill up at all times.Managers did look at the data against our diary declared movements( sales calls selling advertising) they would comment and call us if a collection of reps were in the same area( innocent Starbucks coffee at lunch with colleagues as we were selling in a defined territory) .Would also get emails advising our managers on driving style and speed dry big brother. We had no control on the tracker it was live 247

The data on your private use is classified as personal data so data protection rules apply. That means the company should only access it with a good reason or they're breaking the law. Checking mileage if you're using a fuel card is probably a good reason but the law says they should only have access to mileage data, not to anything else. It sounds like your company was breaking the law.
