Is this super annoying or is it just me?

Backstory: I live on a Georgian terrace in a very famous tourist spot. All the houses are owned occupied bar one. New tenants moved in a couple of doors down they are very well to do and are obviously paying an absolute fortune in rent. All the houses have large gardens and gates at the front.

For some unfathonable reason the new tenant have installed an old fashioned shop bell on their gate which goes off continuously throughout the day. When their kids come and go, when the mum comes back from the school run, when the postman delievers the post etc. Etc.

Why would someone do this? It's driving me potty! I feel a bit petty asking them to take it down and I'm not sure if I'm being a bit unreasonable?

Just steal the clanger ( non technical term...) and feign ignorance.

Yes it’s very annoying, I’d hate it too.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/09/2017 19:47

I would be as annoyed as you are. It's a jarring noise that totally ruins the peace and quiet, never mind that it's just ridiculous. The clanging affects everyone on the street - it's just thoughtless.

Owlettecatboy · 28/09/2017 19:47

I've already had a look and it is firmly screwed in. I'm worried I might get caught if I go round with a screwdriver!

That's ludicrous and twee as fuck

Pacificplaza · 28/09/2017 19:49

Is it important for us to know that they're big expensive houses? Surely this would be annoying anywhere?

DartmoorDoughnut · 28/09/2017 19:49

Put a thick glove on to stop clanger clanging when you grab it, hold clanger thing, yank it off and run!

gunsandbanjos · 28/09/2017 19:50

If it’s firmly attached maybe some glue would help?

pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 19:50

Agree, sneak out in the dead of night under cover of darkness with a pair of wire cutters and snap off the clangy bit (also non technical term).

I would imagine that that would send a very strong message that it's annoying the hell out of at least one of their neighbours.

Crumbs1 · 28/09/2017 19:51

Spray building foam.

Soubriquet · 28/09/2017 19:51

Oh god that would drive me potty!!

My dh would have no problem going round there and politely asking them to remove it....before yanking it off if they refused

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 28/09/2017 19:51

Stick a blob of chewing gum on the clanger

DartmoorDoughnut · 28/09/2017 19:51

Ir some of these? Something's similar obvs just to shut t up, reapply a few times and hopefully they'll give up and take it down?!

Just put a thick condom on the annoying clanger - works every time.

BertrandRussell · 28/09/2017 19:54

Why is the background stuff relevant? A new neighbour is doing something that is very disruptive. Ask them to please stop doing it. Sorted.

thenightsky · 28/09/2017 19:54

I second the building foam.

Owlettecatboy · 28/09/2017 19:55

@pacificplaza I'm just trying to set the scene. The bell is fitting with the era of the house and they might feel that it's adding to the character!

Also as the are probably paying a lot more than me to stay there I'm a bit indimitated and worried that they will think that they can do as the like.

OP posts:
pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 19:56

I wouldn't unscrew it Owlette, they'll just assume someone had bell envy and stole it to use for themselves.

You need to make it clear that you are disabling it because it's annoying so I fear some sort of criminal damage is the only way you'll get the message across.

Owlettecatboy · 28/09/2017 19:58

The bell is so big and looks antique. I fear that the stickers won't work and the building foam might damage it.

I think I will go round tomorrow and politely tell them it's annoying me.

I wasn't sure if I was being petty so just wanted some other opinions. Thank you everyone.

I agree with @Crumbs1! Building foam has got to be the way to go

pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 20:02

Ah, if it looks bit and antique then, no don't use wire cutters on it.

Sounds like it's as you say, you just have to tell them how annoying it is.

pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 20:03

*big, not bit

thecakefairy · 28/09/2017 20:03

Just stick a note on it saying 'oh my god, this is driving me mad!!!!!'

pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 20:04

Actually, a notes a good idea, that way you don't have to actually speak to them about it. That would be the way I'd go.

Owlettecatboy · 28/09/2017 20:06

A note is an excellent idea!
