Man engagement ring

I work with a guy who is a compulsive liar and a massive bullshitter so I tend to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

Yesterday he made a joke about accidentally walking into Sexual Health and today it came up again. (The joke, not anything else!Grin)
But then he got really 'oh woe is me' about being celibate and how there was no prospect in that area, implying that he was alone.

I, in confusion, said 'But aren't you married?'
He said no.
I looked at his ring finger and said, 'But you wear a wedding ring?'
'Oh no, I'm not married. It's an engagement ring.'

It's not a religious or cultural thing. He's just wearing an engagement ring (although he dolefully explained the issues with his engagement situation - but that's another story)

Are engagement rings for men a thing? Or is this just him bullshitting me again?

Is he in a same sex relationship? Often one man will propose to the other with an engagement ring.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 27/09/2017 14:09

I do know men with engagement rings, but they are gay. Is he gay?

Whambarsarentasfizzyastheywere · 27/09/2017 14:10

I know a few guys with engagement rings, its not uncommon.

No, not gay. Engaged to a woman

Dh had an engagement ring. He's not gay (to my knowledge).

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 27/09/2017 14:12

Very unusual but then, I detest jewelry on men.

bridgetreilly · 27/09/2017 14:12

It's definitely uncommon among straight couples.

AlbusPercival · 27/09/2017 14:13

My now DH has one, I am a woman

ZaraW · 27/09/2017 14:16

I don't know any man who wears one apart from several Gay men. I bought my ex a watch when we got engaged.

FluffyPersian · 27/09/2017 14:17

My (male) fiance has one and wears it every day, but then... I was the one who proposed to him and wanted to do a complete role reversal. So he has one.... I don't!

It was £17 from Amazon and he likes it so much, he will use it as his wedding ring when we get married in July Smile

My H has an engagement ring and a wedding ring

fantasmasgoria1 · 27/09/2017 14:25

My df works with a couple of straight guys with engagement rings so yeah it’s a thing!

CoughLaughFart · 27/09/2017 14:26

I don't understand. He claims he's celibate with no chance of that changing, yet he's engaged - and the bit you don't get is whether men should have engagement rings?

PinkHeart5913 · 27/09/2017 14:26

Don't see why they can't be a thing for men.

Maybe his parter asked him and that's why he wears the ring?
Maybe he just likes jewellery?

MiniMummy576 · 27/09/2017 14:45

CoughLaughFart - well he hinted that the reason for the celibate comment is that his fiancée is refusing to have sex. She's had (according to him) two miscarriages within the last year so has 'confusingly' decided she's too afraid to get pregnant.

PinkHeart5913 there's no reason why they shouldn't be, I was just curious whether anyone else had come across it as he's known to fudge the truth

Is he engaged to an Asian (ie Turkey to China so the whole lot)? If so he could have gotten an engagement ring and perhaps also an engagement necklace/ bracelet depending on the culture.

babybubblescomingsoon · 27/09/2017 14:54

Are you in Plymouth OP? Grin

MiniMummy576 · 27/09/2017 15:02

@babybubblescomingsoon Smile Plymouth? Sorry, you're going to have to explain that one to me... Smile

I have seen a few, it's not common though.

ImListening · 27/09/2017 15:07

Greek here- men wear engagement rings.

Engagement in Greek Orthodox religion is taken very seriously, a priest performs a betrothal service where rings are exchanged between the couple.

Standandwait · 27/09/2017 16:59

Swedish men traditionally wear an engagement ring but not a wedding ring, but the engagement ring looks exactly like a wedding ring

don't get why an engagement doesn't mean monogamy though!

FizzyGreenWater · 27/09/2017 17:32

No idea, but I definitely think 'mengagement ring' should be a new phrase.

Buck3t · 27/09/2017 17:35

My husband has one. Why wouldn't he?

Appuskidu · 27/09/2017 17:42

My dad has one! It's a signet ring. My mum says that it wasn't that common for men to have wedding rings then (60s) but sometimes went for an engagement ring instead.
