To keep him off school?

Morning. My little boy isn’t very well. He has been coughing and snotty for a few days, sent him to school on Monday and he was ok, just very snotty. Monday night he was awake a lot coughing and just seemed fed up. Kept him off school and took him to the docs. She diagnosed chest and throat infection and gave antibiotics.
He started these yesterday and will continue until sat.
The thing is in the day he doesn’t seem ill, just coughing. But he’s playing and laughing and normal. I asked the doc about school and she said if he was hers she would keep him off. In the past he has really struggled with his chest and has been hospitalised many times, but the last time was over a year ago.
Would you keep him off or let him go in? He’s in reception and only been at school 3 weeks. If he was still at preschool I wouldn’t hesitate to keep him off but now he’s at school I just don’t know.
I don’t want to be one of those mums that takes them out because of a cold but this is more than that!

I would keep him off today at least. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in today and he will feel much better.

Ds has a lot of chest problems and I always just play it by ear (unless on oral steroids then he is off until the course finishes) - we are also lucky though that the school are sensible both in willingness to give medicine and not pushing for him back sooner than needed

Id keep him off another day. One of mine missed 11 days of school in reception, the other 9. Just kept catching stuff. Since then they miss maybe a day a year.

Keep him off. An extra day won't hurt (esp since it is reception and it'll be largely playing at this pont) and you don't want to send him in and then end up with him relapsing.

As the mum of children who both had frequent chest infections I would give the antibiotics 48 hours before sending him back to school.

I think I’ll keep him off. He has an eye appointment on Friday morning so will probs just keep him off till next week. Is that too long?

Nope I wouldn't say so especially given his history with chest infections

Pancakeflipper · 27/09/2017 08:59

I'd be keeping him off today too if he's had chest/breathing issues in the past. A day of rest must help reboost the immune and energy levels to fight against the infection?
