To expect my 2p change

Me and dd went to the annual book fair at school today and brought 2 books totalling £10.98. I handed over £11 and waited for my 2p but the lady just served the next person. It was only when that person questioned her for her change that she told her they had no 2p or 1p. Should she at least told me they had no change rather than just taking my money? I know it’s only 2p but ‘look after the pennies’ and all that...

Rude to not even tell you and just start serving someone else

At my local garage if my diesel comes to eg £50.02 they just ask for £50 so I am happy for it to go both ways. YABU - sorry!

in shops where I live prices are rounded up or down to the nearest 5c, nobody deals in coppers, they are worthless.

Hmm yes it is rude but it wouldn't bother me if it was the school. If I were in a shop it would because i know they wouldn't let me off 2p therefore, I'd want the change.

It is rude, she should have told you, if she did and said that she had no 2 or 1p and she will give it in half an hour once she has some more change, you would have told her to forget it, I hope.

YANBU. 2p is 2p. That could be the difference as to whether you can buy a loaf of bread of not. Also would you have been able to hand over £10.96 and walk away with the books

What I find more extraordinary is that it has played on your mind sufficiently to come home and start a thread on the internet about it!

This is happening a lot now it I think it's really rude to presume the customer doesn't want their 1 or 2 p change. "Pennies make Pounds" why should your pennies build up another businesses pounds?
However at the book fayre I'd let it go.

Yes she was cheeky. This happened to us in a café a while ago and to the people on the next table too. They took an embarrassingly long time to bring our change. We usually leave a tip but didn't because of their attitude. Not on.

Obviously I wouldn’t have minded if she told me before I paid. What annoys me is that I couldn’t purchase something if I was 1p short! To the poster who asked if I worked, yes I do , why?

If I was down to my last 38p in life I think I'd have bigger problems to be honest, and I wouldn't be buying a tin of soup. i certainly wouldn't have spent my other last 10 quid odd on books at the school book fair, would I?

It's the presumption that's rude, it's polite to say there is no change sorry. I put all my coppers in the children's money boxes which go into their savings account when full. So yes, i want my change back please even if it is coppers !

Honestly there's a big difference between the school books fair and a commercial business. I suppose they're making the assumption that you are happy for your change to be pushed into the money raised.
I really wouldn't sweat it.
