Friend "Liz" went on a coach trip today to a historic house. She went with a friend and they took a double seat about halfway down the coach.

A woman was sitting on her own in front of them in the window seat. The coach began to fill up until there were hardly any seats left. A somewhat overweight woman wanted to sit next to the woman in front of Liz and tried to lift the arm rest between the seats. The woman pushed it back down and an argument developed.

The window woman said if she raised the armrest the other woman would then be sitting on her seat and she needed the room herself (she was also quite well built). The other woman said she'd be hanging over the edge of the seat and into the aisle if the armrest wasn't raised and window woman said it wasn't her problem. It carried on like that for a while with both women trying to hold onto the armrest.

Eventually the driver intervened and found aisle woman a different seat. Liz thinks window woman should have sucked it up, her friend didn't.

So who was unreasonable?

Past the armrest was window-woman's seat. I wouldn't want someone pressed right up against me either and to be frank, if they're too overweight to fit in one normal sized seat, that's a whole lot of their problem.

Nah, I agree with window woman. Having your personal space invaded is very unpleasant.

If we were both large I'd leave the armrest up and help her out not humiliate her and have her ass half off the seat. No need for that x

Window person was in the right. I'm big myself and v conscious not to spill into other people's space

Window woman was right. It doesn't matter who you are or what shape you are, you need to make yourself fit into your own space

I don't understand - so there was another seat available? Why didn't the second woman to get on take the other seat?

Aisle woman wrong. Noone wants to be that close to a stranger.

I've been on a coach where the seats slide out a little during the journey, so you are a little less cramped.

As there was another seat available aisle woman should have just moved to it without the driver having to take her to it!

Yep, aisle woman was BU. I’m big and when I’m on public transport I’m so conscious about invading other peoples space. If other spaces were free I’d always choose one where I’m not in someone else’s way.

I think the driver may have rearranged some other passengers.

Aisle woman was 100% wrong. She has no right to make her issues other peoples' problems.

Aisle woman definitely. I had a smilar thing on a flght where a woman wanted to lfe the arm rest and I refused. I hate personal contact and the arm rest to me is the boundary of your seat.

Thanks for the replies, looks like most agree with Liz and me. I hate being touched by strangers and I'd have kept the armrest down.

In the other woman's position I'd have got there early and bagged a window seat, giving others the choice whether or not to sit next to me.
