To think that CATS is a pile of poo?

Went to see CATS a while ago and was really looking forward to it. I quite like Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and LOVE Evita (even though it took a few viewings to understand it!) but I just could not get into this one.

I could not understand the 'story' at all, if there was one. It was just a load of songs and I couldn't hear what they were singing half the time so it made no sense. Maybe if I could hear the words it would have made more sense.

I loved 'Memory' though. But I've no idea how that relates to the show.

I've seen it twice - once was London and once Norwich.

I looooved it both times!
Lion King is my all time favourite though!

isseywithcats · 26/09/2017 16:59

ive seen cats twice was brilliant, by the way the story is the jellical (cats have a jelical name as well as the normal name) ball held once a year and one cat gets a chance to be reborn young and lucky, the elaine page character grizabella is the one who gets the privilidge, (song memories) and the other characters are the ones attending the ball,

gttia · 26/09/2017 17:04

I didn't like it either, and was really looking fwd to it too

Neverwantedthis · 26/09/2017 17:07

Worst show I've seen to date

isseywithcats · 26/09/2017 17:20

and the song memories is her remembering back to when she was a bit of a glamour puss who mixed in the best cat circles and now shes old and broken down

Many years ago, when I was a massage therapist, I used to massage cast/crew at the New London Theatre (I don't think it's staged there any more, is it?). After/between massages, I sometimes used to slip in to the auditorium and watch rehearsals for a bit. It was fascinating. Smile I saw the actual full show once, but actually I preferred watching them rehearse.

TatterdemalionAspie · 26/09/2017 17:31

Mind you, I loathe musicals, generally, so am unlikely to have enjoyed the actual show. Hmm Grin

LadyHonoriaDedlock · 26/09/2017 17:47

Cats is shite. It has no plot. If you think of it as just a dance show with some songs I guess it would be OK.

WhooooAmI24601 · 26/09/2017 17:50

I like it. Love others but Cats isn't bad, just that other ones are so good it spoils it a little because it's not super-amazing.

My favourite ever musical is the Lion King. We've seen it twice, New York and London and I cried at the opening both times, it's genuinely one of the most beautiful musicals I've ever seen.

Allthebestnamesareused · 26/09/2017 17:52

Cats is based on a book of poems rather than an actual story hence it is pretty much just a collection of songs

5rivers7hills · 26/09/2017 17:53

It's terrible. I left at the interval.

Soubriquet · 26/09/2017 17:58

I love CATS

I even have the Elaine Page version on DVD Grin

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 26/09/2017 18:01

I love it. It's a dance show rather than a traditional musical.

DH looked utterly perplexed even we saw it. I leaned over and "whispered, there isn't a plot, just watch the dancing" and he managed to relax a little bit then!

TammySwansonTwo · 26/09/2017 18:17

Lloyd-Webber is a plagiarising shill and 90% of his work is bloody dreadful. Dont know how anyone can stand it to be honest! When I was training as a singer I went out of my way to avoid his material as it was just hideous (Phantom Of The Opera being the one exception for me personally). There's just so much more out there these days, so much more interesting - why the hell is anyone still producing Cats?!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/09/2017 18:32

Yeah, I was underwhelmed when I saw it last year.

Don't like Phantom of the Opera either.
I DO like Rock of Ages. That was immense. And Dirty Dancing.

IDoLikeARainbow · 26/09/2017 18:36

Agree didn’t like it either. Extremely close to leaving at interval. Also felt lots of the songs were reworked versions of other ALW songs.

Brittbugs80 · 26/09/2017 18:45

I love CATS! Think it's brilliant. I've seen it 4 times now and it never gets boring.

Carousel is brilliant, so is Blood Brothers, Annie and I love the Nutcracker too.

We Will Rock You was amazing. At the end of that show, a curtain at the back dropped and Bryan May was there playing guitar. Absolutely outstanding!

CornedBeef451 · 26/09/2017 18:47

I saw Cats and thought it was shite. I really couldn't bring myself to care what was going on, I was just hoping someone would die and make it end.

Mummyme1987 · 26/09/2017 18:49

It's awful. Worst one I had ever seen.

mummymummums · 26/09/2017 18:56

I love CATS - seen it three or possibly four times.
I adore Joseph the best though - saw it 10 days ago with Joe McElderry and it was amazing!
