Feeding 6 month old

Posting here for traffic, have also posted in the relevant section. I'll just copy and paste from there. Any advice would really be appreciated tia x

My 6 month old is screaming and refusing her bottle after 2 oz. it's a battle to get anything down her and has been for the past few days. She's quite content and settled between feeds but all hell breaks loose when it's time for her bottle.
She was like this a few weeks ago too and ended up at the hospital, they couldn't identify what was wrong but were not happy with the way she was behaving during feedtime and said if she didn't improve over 24 hours they'd feed her through a drip.
She gradually did improve but it was so stressful and I was literally crying each time I had to feed her.
Any thoughts on what this could be?

We had this sort of thing and it took over six months to figure out it was significant lactose intolerance. There were other symptoms on top though but extreme unhappiness half way into bottle feeds was the first one followed by gassiness later on. It is not statistically likely to be this in your case but it's something to consider at least.

puglife15 · 24/09/2017 22:28

Had she been ill eg stomach bug before it first happened?

puglife15 · 24/09/2017 22:28

Have you recently started weaning onto solids?

fieryme · 24/09/2017 22:31

She's been like this at least 3 times since she's been born. Each time lasting between 1-3 weeks. Been seen by gps and the hospital. They keep telling me not to worry as long as she's still having half her normal daily intake but it can be significantly less.
She's normally quite good with feeds, will finish a 7oz bottle within 20 mins.

Balsamicbarbara how was the intolerance diagnosed?

Puglife I started weaning her 10 days ago, she had baby porridge in the morning and puréed veg late afternoon and normally has 4 bottles spaced out through out the day. She's seemed ok, nothing out of the ordinary to make me think she's not been well.

Id suspect an Intolerance too.

Lactose intolerance is fairly uncommon

However a cows milk.protein intolerance is alot nore common.

fieryme · 24/09/2017 22:39

Could it be an intolerance even though she has phases of screaming/crying? She's not always like this x

Can she take the bottles half as much and twice as often? My baby who is admittedly breastfed seems to get quite uncomfortable after feeds and seems to prefer very short fairly frequent feeds.

puglife15 · 24/09/2017 22:42

Doesn't sound like lactose intolerance - that's a very serious issue in babies and results in failure to thrive, unless a temporary condition usually following illness -, could be cow's milk protein allergy but strange she is only affected sporadically. Look up symptoms and she if she has any others like eczema, coughing, rubbing face, reflux, poor weight gain etc - bottle refusal and distress quite common.

puglife15 · 24/09/2017 22:43

Oh are you exclusive bottle feeding or mix feeding?

fieryme · 24/09/2017 22:48

Puglife- i stopped breastfeeding when she was 3 months old, but she's been taking a bottle since 2 months, mainly pumped by during the night. She doesn't have eczema, and seems ok in herself. Last week I did notice her holding her ear, but only at bath time.

Applesandpears- I do try to give her the remaining milk half hour or so later but even then she will take around 2oz and then the screaming will start again.

I have thought about growth spurts but don't babies generally drink more then?

Have you changed to a follow on milk since 6 months or is if the same milk she's always been On?

fieryme · 24/09/2017 22:52

She's still on stage 1, was going to switch to follow on. Good idea or not??

Have you tried changing the size of the bottle teat? My DD was always like that when it was time to change the size.

fieryme · 25/09/2017 07:21

Yes, she's on size 3s. Have even tried giving her infacol before feeds but that doesn't seem to be making a difference

Could the solid food be upsetting her? As she is 6 months old you don't really need to be feeding her baby porridge and purees, you can just give finger foods for her to play with

MrTrebus · 25/09/2017 08:15

Yeah maybe try baby led weaning and see how that goes, maybe try a sippy cup instead of a bottle for milk and water?

fieryme · 25/09/2017 08:27

I did think to stop the puréed stuff but she did get on fine with it initially and it's the only thing she will take.
We tried the sippy cup but she hasn't got the hang of it yet, I'll fill it with water and give it to her but she rather chew it Grin
