Deliveries to neighbour

Not really an AIBU but thought i would get more opinions here.

When a person takes in a parcel for a neighbour, is the obligation on them to take it round to the addressee or for the addressee to go and collect it. What's a reasonable timeframe for doing so?

I have my own thoughts on the matter but there have been a couple of instances recently which have made me wonder if I'm wrong.

I give them an hour to collect it, and if they don’t I assume the delivery company hasn’t left a card so I take it round.

It's not a big deal, as a neighbour I'd make a couple of attempts to take it to them and leave a note on the second attempt saying I have their parcel. But i'd be just as reasonable letting them come get it at a time suitable for them. By us both trying to visit each other we increase the chance that we'll catch each other when we're at home at the same time.

I tend to think I have a bit more responsibility as the parcel holder though as if I'm not home they can't get it from me. So I'd reach out as much as possible to know if done my best getting it to them.

I would have thought that giving them an hour to collect it was a bit short. They might be at work all day.

Im always taking things for my NDN and they rarely collect and sometimes it sits in my hall for days. I dont mind (too much) at the moment, but in the run up to xmas it was like a fucking sorting office in my hall. With massive amazon deliveries while they were at work, that they didnt collect from me. I stopped taking them in in the end, although i feel bad for the delivery drivers as i know they get penalised.

No, no spat at all. Like you both say, it's no big deal, I just wondered what everyone else did.

I give them a day to collect it and if not I take it round. Or if I see their car parked outside then I take it the same evening.
They take deliveries for me so it is only fair.

If I've taken something in I go and take it if I see the neighbour is in. And if I've come back and see a neighbour has something for me, I go and pick it up.

I think the onus is on the true recipient to collect from the neighbour who has kindly taken it in. I'd usually wait til the evening for the recipient to come and get it or if I knew they were in and I was going out, I might drop it round. It depends on what is convenient to me.

My uncle lives next to a block of flats. He was getting loads of people's parcels and some of them started having a go at him for not spending his evenings providing a delivery service . He just refuses to take in parcels now unless he knows the person well.

Branleuse - I had always thought the same as you but recently I have had parcels here for 3 days and 5 days before they've been collected. Two different neighbours and not ones where I can see their houses easily from mine to tell when they're back home for me to take round.

@ilovesooty - depends how far away your neighbours are! I live in a row of town houses so it’s easier to just pop round before you’ve taken your shoes and coat off. We all do the same.

beanbag - do they know you’ve got them? Delivery firms don’t always leave cards.

Totally depends on your relationship with the neighbours - when I lived at my mums we were like a sub post office! Mum didn't mind - it was a half an hour drive the collection depot! Some neighbours would come and collect and sometimes we would drop them in. If they were obviously gifts for the kids and in branded boxes (build a bear and Disney - I am talking about you!) I would text them and warn them so we could either drop over when the kids were in bed or they could come get them when the kids weren't around.

Mum is always treated very well by the various neighbours at Xmas and it works fine, as they help my parents out in different ways.

In turn the postman (they have two different ones on their round - rural community) looks after my parents as they do him a favour taking in all the parcels as it saves him work, and has in the past gone out of his way to deliver stuff that needs to be signed for! (He saw her car once at the local shops so went into the shop to find her so she get her parcel!)

If she had rude ungrateful neighbours though she wouldn't take anything in.

I presume they do know we've got it but I can't be sure. My personal experience of the local delivery drivers is that they always leave cards but obviously I can't guarantee that. Either way they would have been expecting it to arrive and when I have deliveries from the same company I get an email and phone notification that it has been delivered.

I think it should definitely be collected, neighbours aren’t there to provide a storage and delivery service. Expecting someone to drop your parcel to you is cheeky.

I always collect. The thing I really hate is when you get one of those cards when you are actually in!! My neighbour will take in my parcel and then piss off out for two days. I never understand why he takes in my parcel and then goes off for days preventing me from actually getting my parcel.

I would give them a couple of days. Up to a week if I know that they work long hours.

Unfortunately the delivery people don't always leave a card or it isn't seen by the neighbour, so they don't know to collect their parcel.

Our local sorting office (a few mins walk away) is about to close down. There will then be a three or four mile drive to get non-delivered items and no where to park when you get there.

If asked by a company that I order from, I request that parcels are left in my open porch. So far nothing has been taken. I appreciate that not everyone has a porch though.

We have real problems with delivery drivers not leaving cards. So I will always try and pop round with something as most of the time the recipient has no idea that it has been delivered and where it is.

As it is usually something I want and I don’t want my neighbour to have the inconvenience of my parcel l go round straight away and collect it

Our lovely neighbours often take in parcels for us but I go round to collect as soon as I'm home. They've done me a favour by taking it in, no need to put them out by making them bring it to me. A couple of times they've brought round heavier baby stuff as I'm pregnant which is really sweet of them.

I would let the neighbour know as soon a possible (by phone or email) and expect them to collect it within 24 hours. However if Iw as passing their house on my way somewhere before that i would drop it off.

I often have to guess the house number of where my parcel has been left. The postman has poor writing!

It's embarrassing to ask neighbours if they have your stuff. I take the card with and show them the badly written numbers.

I've had to stop taking parcels in as they were never collected. I always get a text/email to say my parcel has been delivered and if it didn't I would obviously chase it up to find out where it was. They don't seem to bother her so I stopped taking them in.

We have no near neighbours.

While I was away DH received a card saying a parcel had been taken in by a neighbour, but he had no idea where the road was (the houses face into the opposite side of the park our house is next to).

He tried to find the address but couldn't. So he reported it to Amazon. He got a refund. About a week later, the neighbour (who used to look after our kids at nursery) arrived with the parcel.

We don't get asked to take parcels as no near neighbours
