WTF?

Uber has itsbissues but this is ridiculous.

TFL have bowed to Black cab pressure and we will all pay massively for it. Or get mini cabs that are less safe and treat heir drivers worse.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/09/2017 18:40

I won't be going for a night out back home now, way too expensive without uber!

silverbell64 · 24/09/2017 18:42

Uber exploits cheap labour. Im delighted they've been banned.

silverbell64 · 24/09/2017 18:42

If you can't afford a decent amount for a cab home then, no don't go out.

TheAntiBoop · 24/09/2017 18:44

Nights out in London are expensive yet people want to scrimp on the taxi home.

This isn't about the black cabs having friends in high places. Google uber lobbyists and you will see they are a thousand times more influential than the black cab drivers will ever be.

londonista · 24/09/2017 18:52

Riding, Sw17 is a vast postcode... but don't take my word for it, of course.

By the way, just for larks, give me the name of one of your taxi companies and I'll see if they're happy to come and take my mum back to Clapham, she's here now.

Andrewofgg

With the greatest respect, you haven't got a clue.
Unless you include the sexual abuse of customers as innovative and successful ?

Oh, & they don't stand a chance in court. Smile

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 18:58

No they are not, this is people complaining that Uber are playing the same game as TFL have been playing for years, it's nothing more about complaining about entryism and wanting a closed market

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:02

Unless you include the sexual abuse of customers

Are they disproportionate to other cab firms?

The fact that Uber drivers have to be licensed the same as any other black/min cab driver suggest that it could be an issue around licensing and checks around all cab drivers?

londonista · 24/09/2017 19:03

Perking ... weirdly books is the one thing I don't buy from Amazon, I love going into bookshops.

Everything else though tends to come from Amazon... 😔

I am genuinely thinking about challenging myself to have an Amazon free Xmas this year. It's our govt that's allowing them to get away with paying so little tax, they're not breaking any law. Highly immoral though. People don't seem to care though about tax avoidance. Maybe they should get into the taxi business then people would care a bit more!

surferjet · 24/09/2017 19:06

Do you actually know why Uber's license hasn't been renewed?
Go & do some research then come back & join the discussion.

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:10

Uber exploits cheap labour. Im delighted they've been banned.

Although this could be true this is not just isolated to Uber and people are brushing a lot under the carpet to come out on side of this decision.

There is a test which says that Uber (and all other taxi services) must be "fit and proper". It's a terrible test, because it doesn't really mean anything and can be interpreted however you want. It would be much better to have a set of laws (national or London specific) that they had to abide by - that way TfL isn't in a position of favouring their allies and hurting their enemies.

Look around the world and you will see hundreds of cities which let pretty much anyone drive a taxi - competition drives down price, and innovation like Uber has also been introduced (but often not as successfully as in London - the reason it did so well in London was because black cabs were previously so dominant).

The system at present is terrible. Black cabs have unfair advantages - they are the only taxis allowed to take hails from the street, and numbers are kept very low. This artificially increases the price so that London taxis were one of the most expensive in the world. Uber came along and successfully disrupted that model. Uber hasn't broken any law, but TfL is now trying to shut it down because it has deemed it not "fit and proper". That is a terrible system ripe for abuse.

Uber will appeal and most likely succeed. If they fail then I suspect Uber will become a major issue in the next London mayoral election - with the pro-Uber candidate getting a significant boost in votes.

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:11

Do you actually know why Uber's license hasn't been renewed?

Yes see my previous post.

surferjet · 24/09/2017 19:20

So as far as your concerned, uber haven't done anything wrong, are a great company and TFL just doesn't like them?

Ok. Smile

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:21

So as far as your concerned, uber haven't done anything wrong, are a great company and TFL just doesn't like them?

So what have they done wrong then?

Let's not forgot Black cabbies have been working a 'gig economy' zero hour contact, self employed, tax evading job for years.

OK Smile

silverbell64 · 24/09/2017 19:23

How much do uber drivers get paid? Anyone care to elaborate on that? Is it akin to a zero hour contract that should be totally banned or not?

silverbell64 · 24/09/2017 19:24

However I am a person that thinks minimum wage should be £10 an hour.

silverbell64 · 24/09/2017 19:24

Black cab drivers tariffs are set.

surferjet · 24/09/2017 19:26

You're wasting my time.
I like talking to people who have half a clue what they're talking about.

Have a nice evening Smile

limitedperiodonly · 24/09/2017 19:31

I love the Daily Mail's confusion over this. They have spent months writing negative stories about Uber, because it is tied up in Dave Cameron's chumocracy in some way I can't remember.

But since Friday morning they just don't know what to do. How can they possibly condone something done under the auspices of a Labour mayor that may be kowtowing to the GMB?

Their comment yesterday was a triumph of fence-sitting. No wonder the human arse is the shape it is

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:31

I like talking to people who have half a clue what they're talking about.

Ah, so you don't have a clue yourself what your talking about and are just being partisan, pretty much as I suspected, maybe wait for a Canary article to prompt you into the next area of your argument.

RidingWindhorses · 24/09/2017 19:34

Of course it's a large area, Londonista but it starts 5 mins down the road & it's the same borough.

I've already given you the name of cab firm above, it's quite big and smaller local firms to you may be quicker and cheaper.

londonista · 24/09/2017 19:35

Please can you remind me of it again. Mum is waiting.

RidingWindhorses · 24/09/2017 19:36

Details of how Uber manage to undercut other cab firms:

The true cost of your Uber ride is much higher than you think

londonista · 24/09/2017 19:38

That wasn't my question. What's the name of that cab company. I want them to come and take my mum home.

Justanotherlurker · 24/09/2017 19:42

How much do uber drivers get paid? Anyone care to elaborate on that? Is it akin to a zero hour contract that should be totally banned or not?

Uber are pretty bad and have priced there business model onto driverless cars taking off, but the issue is that Uber have an audit trail, most mini cabs and black cabs are done oral and are still subject to the zero hour low paid gig economy.
