I just got a call...

BT from India... problem with my broadband. I laughed. he asked why? I said its a well known scam.
He asked do I have a bank account with at least £10k?
I asked why, even if he was from BT, would he think that's any of his business?
he said so that i could send it to him in India.
I asked if he'd like it converted into rupees first.
He said that would be good.
I asked for his bank account details. he said no, it needs to be moneygram.
I asked if that was because the police would catch him if I had his bank account? He said yes it was.
I confirmed that would be because he was a fraudster and I'd be his victim.

At this point, i think he knows that its not going to happen. But a minute later he ask me to get on with it. He asks if I think he is stupid.
I say no, i don't think he's stupid because I believe he knows that there is no way on Earth that I'll be sendinghim any money at all.
Then he just politely thanks me and hangs up!

How bizarre

I think its called the Nigerian scam. the more outrageous the claim, the more likely they are to find out if the recipient is gullible enough to potentially give him their money. The recipient gets bonus points if they hear the word Nigeria and still don't twig.

I've just had a cold call from a gentleman whose company will ensure that I no longer receive cold calls or junk mail! I didn't stay on the phone long enough to find out how much it would cost me but it would be for my lifetime (25 years apparently).

I keep getting the car accident ones. I ask them where they got their information from...they usually hang up.

The computer scam ones, I tell them I haven't got Microsoft. They argue saying they can see it. I ask, how? It goes back and forwards for a while then they hang up. It's cost them time and money and is entertaining for me.

BT are ALWAYS phoning me. Sigh. I say thank you for your concern and can you let me have the reference number? A reference number madam? Yes, a reference number so that I can confirm with BT that this is a genuine call and not a scam...... Hello? Hello? Hung up and never called me mother.

I had one (I think was a microsoft one). I kept asking the woman to repeat what she'd said because i was having trouble understanding. She kept calling me "maam". Eventually, she just lost her temper, along with her deferential tone and swore at me. then hung up.

They called you from India, were happy to get rupees, yet it's a Nigerian scam? Okay.

The PPI ones are annoying, especially as I'm on TPS and I think they are UK based.

I bought a phone with Call Guardian so no longer get these calls...they irritated me but I did like having fun with them sometimes

@charlestonchaplin - the type of fraud is called a Nigerian scam. Google it. Its the name given to the whole genre of that type of fraud.

So named because it often starts with an email saying I an=m a Nigerian prince. I need to get money out of my country. Send me £1000 and i'll send you £10 gazillion and you can keep a % as a reward.

These types of callers can be very persistent even after you have called them out as scammers! Er.....hello.....have you forgotten the conversation we had 5 minutes ago?!

Download the Truecaller app on to your mobile. It flashes up if the number has been previously reported as spam.

I get a lot of scam emails.
Some look pretty genuine.two of the most genuine looking ones were one claiming to be from HMRC stating I was owed a tax rebate and asking me to confirm my bank details,another was claiming to be from Amazon asking me to confirm my bank details.
But when you try to click on a link to go to another page,the page can't be reached.
It's scary how genuine the emails looked.

Except that's not what you described is it mmzz? You described a completely different scenario.

The companies house and HMRC ones always make my heart stop! I have a company, so they could be genuine. It always takes me a minute to calm myself down when i realise that no, my company returns are not due and the email address the request came in on isn't even the one I use for companies house

@charlestonchaplin google it. You'll never believe me. Its just a generic name. It doesn't have to be from Nigeria to be a Nigerian scam

My mum always plays dumb and says she doesn't have a computer and doesn't know what the internet is. They soon get bored.

Not someone pretending to be a Nigerian prince, so it doesn't fit being called a Nigerian scam. They are more often emails from funnily enough Nigerians:

I had a nice chap ring me the other day to say I needed to renew the breakdown insurance for my TV and set top box, and if I didn't send him £120 my telly would stop working.
