Sorry if title makes this seem interesting but it's really not!

Ds handed in his maths homework and had it handed back yesterday to re do and got told to show working out properly.

Except how the feck do you answer this?

*Some tins of beans are packed into 7 boxes of which there are 12 tins per box. If I pack them into 4 boxes instead, how many tins will there be in each box?

21

HopefullyAnonymous · 19/09/2017 07:06

This is a wind up, yes?

youarenotkiddingme · 19/09/2017 07:07

I should ds thinks it's a trick question as apparently they do it now with maths Hmmand the boxes only hold 12 tins.

I think it's badly worded and it's

7x12=84
84/4= 21

OP posts:
LittleWitch · 19/09/2017 07:07

There are 84 tins and 4 boxes. 22 tins per box.

TeaStory · 19/09/2017 07:07

Assuming all boxes are full...

Multiply 7 by 12 to find out how many tins there are.

Divide that number by 4 to find out how many in end up in each box.

youarenotkiddingme · 19/09/2017 07:07

Why would it be a wind up?

OP posts:
Pennysnow · 19/09/2017 07:07

Seven boxes of 12 tins of beans will be 84 tins in total.

If you split the 84 tins of beans between 4 boxes instead, there will be 21 in each box.

Hope this helps. Smile

LittleWitch · 19/09/2017 07:07

Oops typo, yes 21.

Dementedswan · 19/09/2017 07:07

7 × 12 = 84

84 ÷ 4 = 21

Answer = 21

Show that he multiplied the 12 by 7 to get the total number of tins. Then he divided it by 4 to get the new number of tins per box.

Deliaskis · 19/09/2017 07:08

To show working...

7 boxes x 12 tins per box = 84 tins.
Repacked into 4 boxes...
84 tins ÷ 4 boxes = 21 tins per box

TeaStory · 19/09/2017 07:08

Ignore my first line, I misread so it's not relevant. The rest is right though.

PlsTryAnother · 19/09/2017 07:08

You need to work out how many tins there are first, so 7x12=84. Then split the 84 tins into 4 boxes so 84/4 = 21 tins in each box.

AlternativeTentacle · 19/09/2017 07:09

Except how the feck do you answer this

do you not tell him to write down how he got that answer? am i missing something?

He has to show how he did it in his head, ie, 7x12 = 84 cans in total, 84/4 boxes =21. Therefore answer is 21 cans in each box.

vxa2 · 19/09/2017 07:11

12x7= 84 tins of beans.

84 divided by 4 = 21

21 tins of beans per box.

Can't find the divided symbol !

Wenchelda · 19/09/2017 07:11

To show working out, I would draw 7 squares with 12 circles in each (i.e. The boxes with the tins in) and then "= 84" next to it. Then I would draw 4 squares and divide the 84 tins into each box, which would equal 21 in each.

(My dcs are 7 and 5 and would do the working out like this if they had that sort of maths problem to solve. Not sure if the working out needs to be different in some way if your ds is older)

Pennysnow · 19/09/2017 07:12

@Euphemie

What are you on about?

I have given the correct answer - which was the first post after the OP's original post, with the working out 5 or 6 posts in!

READ THE FULL THREAD BEFORE HAVING A GO.

And have this back........... Hmm

youarenotkiddingme · 19/09/2017 07:14

Thanks everyone.

Ds is autistic but is amazing at maths. The wording of the questions is causing him difficulty because he reads it as the box holds 12 tins.

I couldn't get him to understand that it doesn't say they only hold 12 just when they put total amount in 7 boxes there was 12 in each.

I said there was 84 tins but hoped if o could get lots of identical answers he'd believe me!

Doing the actual maths isn't the issue tbh.

Thanks for all your help so early in the morning!

Could you help him see it visually, OP, with counters and little pots?
