Should I have let him cross the road?

Elderly but spritely type was standing in the road at a T-junction (v quiet road for the bottom bit of the T) waiting to cross.

I was braking as there was traffic ahead, he's on my left. I could have braked harder to let him across but would then be on the 'keep clear' area. I also hate letting people across in random places for irrational fear they might be too busy waving a thanks instead of looking at the fast traffic coming the other way (perhaps that shocker in a 'Final Destination' film haunts me).
Anyway I budge up a bit and he comes near my window shaking his head slightly with a sad smile as if to say I should've let him across. It was a quick decision not to but really I'm not wrong? Am I?? He wasn't aggressive but I'm niggled. No diagram...

I think people can choose where to cross the road themselves tbh, yeah I think you were a bit unreasonable. But don't over think it

No diagram... YABU Grin

If he chooses to cross where there is no crossing, he chooses to. You also choose how you drive and you would have had to break the law and possibly delay someone driving legally.

There's no reason you should have stopped and particularly not if you would have been in a keep clear box. I appreciate it when people stop to left me cross but I don't expect it.

You don't have to stop to let someone cross the road.

It sounds to me like he was being very entitled in shaking his head at you.

(Unless there's some sort of crossing of course!)
