P45

I started at a job in March and it was mutually agreed that it wasn't for me in late May. I left happily.

I received my final payslip through the post but haven't had a P45. I've taken some time out and am now looking for new employment but still haven't had my P45 through.

I emailed them about it twice in early July and again on Tuesday (they are closed for the summer holidays). I've had no response. Obviously I've not found employment since I left them. I only worked for them for 6 weeks.

Where do I stand? Should I give up on the P45 and use a temporary tax code when I start a new job? My old employer should have given me a P45, right? They agreed when I left to give me a reference despite the short time I spent working for them so I don't want to burn bridges by nagging them, but I really would like to have it. AIBU to keep on at them? Is it not worth the battle?

You can fill in a p45 yourself (it's p46 or something I'm not too sure) not ideal and you will probably go on emergency tax but if you don't want to feel like your bugging the old employer and feel it risks a reference it's probably easier

You can complete a New Starter Checklist (replacement to P46).

With RTI this really isn't a big deal. You'll go on the new payroll, possibly go on emergency tax for a month and when your new employer updates their info it will match your info up with the old records and everything will be fine.

Thanks for the advice. With a previous employer I assumed they would update and they didn't, so I was on the emergency tax code for almost a year. I got a £1000+ tax return that April though!
