Are they things that flash in your mind or is it more a case of remembering something?

I think it varies. For me personally it's a very strong and complete memory of a mostly complete incident

For context, I was raped and occasionally I vividly recall it in my mind.

Before you recommend counselling, I'm on a waiting list.

I don't know whether that's a flashback or just a memory if that makes sense?

Remy, yes that's what it is for me. I recall the whole thing. It's not a flash or anything like that. I just sort of come out of it and notice then that I had been in it.

Yes, to me (personally) I think that's a flashback (similar situation here too Sad Flowers ) I totally get it but I don't think a lot of people do because it's normally portrayed in media as being a flash and then "watching" the incident take place... so I think people think it's like that IYKWIM (but there probably isn't a way to completely portray it in film and such so there's no way for greater awareness)

I would class it as intrusive and unwanted memories of an incident which may occur quite randomly or in response to certain triggers. I then find it exceedingly difficult to clear those thoughts from my mind.
