As we are going back to school ( or rather our little ones are) I thought it would be fun to let off steam by citing ridiculous school rules and punishments.

My old school was private and therefore thecrules were particularly stupid. There was the 6" rule whereby a boy and girl were not supposed to be within 6 incges of each other. This was designed to stop sex and pregnancy but did nothing to stop horny teens screwing in bushes.
Now i gear it has banned all students from visiting a local town " in case they get into mischief. " What if mum and dad want to take them out for lunch there?

If you got in trouble girls had to weat skin coloured tights to school as part of being "gated. " all the cool people got gated... it was a badge of honour as it meant you did cool things like smoke, drink and snog boys.

Do share.

What colour tights did the ungated wear then? Grin

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/09/2017 18:17

DS's nursery had a rule that patents were not allowed to walk with their children through the "carpark" for health and safety reasons.
Instead I had to cross over the (arguably more dangerous) road and enter the school yard from the gate at the opposite pavement.
Said "carpark" was a tiny bit of tarmack containing (at most) one car at a time. Always stationary.

MrsJamesAspey · 03/09/2017 18:19

All the school rules at my kids school seem to be anal.

Boys must wear black socks, jumpers must be worn all day, yep even in the middle of the summer when it's scorching, skirts must exactly knee length, they get put into isolation because their shirt is untucked at the back after PE or isolation because their hair isn't a natural colour 🙄 I just wish they'd spend more time worrying about education than turning them into clones especially as in my experience clothing at work is more relaxed than ever.

motheroreily · 03/09/2017 18:21

Where I worked children had to change into plimsoles whenever coming inside and change into shoes to go outside. These plimsoles were never used to
PE just wearing inside. This took up a lot of time at the start of the day, at the end of breaks and the end of lunch.

But then the children had to take their plimsoles off to go into the library and had to just wear socks Confused

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/09/2017 18:21

One of the deputy headteachers at my secondary school had a totally fierce hatred of what he referred to as "aggressive groups of more than four". Money of us ever really understood his logic....

GutterStar · 03/09/2017 18:21

My secondary school introduced a "no condoms to be brought to school" rule.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/09/2017 18:22

NONE OF US, ffs..!

treaclesoda · 03/09/2017 18:24

At my school, girls and boys had to use different doors to enter and exit the school. The rules were enforced strictly. But everything else in school except PE was mixed. Confused

Coldilox · 03/09/2017 18:24

I was also at private school. Automatic detention if we walked on the grass in the quadrangle.

DW went to an all girls school. They had to eat bananas with a knife and fork or else it was obscene.

Friend went to a girls boarding school and they weren't allowed hairbrushes with handles longer than 3 inches. Make of that what you will!

ShesNoNormanPace · 03/09/2017 18:25

There were no lockers. We were not allowed to carry coats - they had to be in plastic bags. Oooohhhhhh the angst involved in finding the perfect plastic bag from the approved list of shops that also fitted my coat Grin

Stupidest rule at DC's scool is that they are all supposed to wear the same bloody coat - over the blazer as well, so that's fun - and well there's a rule made up by someone who gets a cut from the uniform shop sales who has never tried to retrieve their child from the playground after school. Particularly when they are all wearing the same bloody hat as well.

Airbiscuits · 03/09/2017 18:25

Were you at Millfield, malificent?
We had gating tights. I'm in my 40s now and only just able to wear nude tights again without thinking of it as some kind of punishment.
Given that I have a job that requires business dress, not wearing nude tights seriously limits my sartorial options.

PiratePanda · 03/09/2017 18:26

Bear yoyos, with their FOUR teaspoons of sugar per tiny packet and perfect tooth-decay delivery system, are permitted in packed lunches. But not cheese.

Vonklump · 03/09/2017 18:26

We had to write an essay on why we shouldn't walk across the grass rather than detention.

lottieandmia · 03/09/2017 18:27

At my daughters old all girls school the head would insist that on non uniform days the girls must wear school shoes to stop anyone coming in in 'Jimmy Choos'

coddiwomple · 03/09/2017 18:29

jumpers must be worn all day As much as I support very strict uniforms rule by schools, I would make a huge fuss about that. It's ridiculous.

bbpp · 03/09/2017 18:29

My little sisters school (which I also attended) most definitely isn't private; instead a failing comprehensive turned academy. Apart from ridiculous uniform rules and phones must be turned off from when crossing into the drive, children have also been given detentions for buying sweets before school (not eating in class, simply buying them) and for visiting graves while in Uniform.

Witsender · 03/09/2017 18:31

I was also at private school. Automatic detention if we walked on the grass in the quadrangle.

Yes to this.

And had to go down on knees on a regular basis to make sure that our skirts touched the ground...if they didn't they were too short.

Witsender · 03/09/2017 18:32

Oh, and no blazers to be removed until an official notice was given in chapel, normally sometime in the summer term.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 03/09/2017 18:32

there's a rule made up by someone who gets a cut from the uniform shop sales

Schools are not allowed to make any profit. It doesn't happen.

ShitOrBust · 03/09/2017 18:42

No patent leather shoes or else you risked people seeing the reflection of your knickers.

Albertschair · 03/09/2017 18:46

Gym knickers.... just the whole concept of them. Hideous woolly blue baggy scrotums under gym skirts instead of eg cycling shorts or tracksuit bottoms

BillywigSting · 03/09/2017 18:48

Only the teachers and sixth formers were allowed up the carpeted stairs, everyone else had to go around the bloody houses use the old service stairs (used to be a convent). This was automatic detention

The usual ridiculous rules of gym knickers, skirts having be within a certain length, etc etc.

We also weren't allowed to use the main gate, had to around the back to get into the building. Also automatic detention

Automatic detention for walking on various bits of grass or being in the chapel at the wrong time.

Had to write an essay about the evils of make-up in schools if you got caught with it.

No hair colour other than your own, (so no bottle blonds, highlights, bottle brunettes. One girl got in trouble for the natural highlights that her hair caught in the summer because they thought it had been bleached in. It had, by the sun.)

Knee length socks or tights all year round. No pants for girls.

Blazers all year round, to be worn at all times except p.e and break times.

No running in the playground.

Had to genuflect every time we saw one of the clergy (all the bloody time).

3 detentions equalled an automatic Saturday detention.

Train track braces had to be navy blue (to match the uniform).

I could go on!

Albertschair · 03/09/2017 18:51

Billywig I'm loving the insanity that teeth braces have to match the school uniform

Sashkin · 03/09/2017 18:51

Girls' summer blouses had open collars, and the collars had to sit on top of the blazer collar, not underneath. But the blouse necks were much narrower than the blazer necks, so you had to walk around with your shoulders round your ears to stop the blouse collar slipping inside.

"Black tights are what prostitutes wear" apparently, so we had to wear mid-grey. Specifically mid-grey, not nude (because bare legs, or potentially-bare legs from a distance, look common too). And specifically 10 denier not opaque because yes, opaques are also common. But 10 denier mid-grey tights are not a thing that exists, or weren't a thing that existed in 1990. People used to get regular detentions for the crime of M&S Barely Black.

One hirsute kid with bad 5 o'clock shadow was forcibly dry-shaved by the headmaster with a blunt bic razor in assembly. Then there were the mad, abusive punishments they doled out on residentials. We weren't allowed sunblock "because it's makeup" and so the kid with Aspergers got hospitalised (we just used it covertly, she couldn't due to AS). We weren't allowed sunblock, hats, or to sit in the shade on sports days either.

One boy had his hands plunged into scalding water "because that's how they wash cutlery in the army" - this was a geography field trip not anything army-related. Ended up in hospital. Quite a lot of our trips resulted in teachers putting kids in hospital actually. And the male teachers spent most of the trips drunk. Proper throwing-up drunk. Including the one who drove the minibus. The boys did an annual trip to the Norfolk Broads, and my brother and his friends drove off in the boat leaving the responsible teacher in the pub, and didn't come back until the next day. Nobody was bothered that six 13yr olds were on their own in charge of a boat. Crazy lack of responsibility from the teachers.
