DS 9 and what's app

My DS who is 9 made a friend on holiday who wanted to stay in touch via whatsapp. DS is too young to have a phone of his own so uses whatsapp on my phone and it also means I can keep an eye on the conversation. The other kid has just turned 11. Anyway he whatsapped DS to tell him it was his birthday & so DS (with my help) sent him a little pic of a cake & candles to & a happy birthday message. The kid has just replied with a message saying 'wierdo'. Given that DS barely knows him and only hung out a bit on hols- I'm not sure whether it's a bit unfair or not for him to respond in this way- I don't want DS to feel like he's done something wrong when he was just being kind and age 9.
Aibu to worry?

Don't worry. Just delete the message and firget all about him.

I'd worry, the other kid sounds like they could be a bit Hmm I know they're 9 but surely a comment like that could only be to make your ds feel bad.

Although not a big age gap as such the 11yo is preparing for big school and a 9yo is still a child. .
It was a lovely thing to send but sadly not appreciated. .

That's what I thought @excited. I'm glad it's on my phone so DS has to come through me and I can vet it a bit - I'm not comfortable with it. DS is only 9 and was being sweet and certainly not weird

I deleted the comment and am going to hope DS forgets about the kid- it's a shame as he's been enjoying sending him messages

I think WhatsApp has a user age limit. Something like 16 but not sure.

Happyhappyveggie · 29/08/2017 19:44

You are right @blacktea it does have an age limit- I didn't know that- it's 13. I have been supervising as its on my phone but the other kid has his own phone
