My neighbour who is a similar age is forever calling me either-

  1. Darling
  2. Sweetheart
  3. Sweetie
I am not around her enough to know if she does this with everyone but it really grates. AIBU?

I use these frequently with young kids whilst I'm out and about. As in "wait for mummy, sweetheart" when they're running around like nutters.

But an adult? Why would you?

Gindrinker43 · 27/08/2017 22:57

Has she forgotten your name?

Notknownatthisaddress · 27/08/2017 22:57

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

But you are entitled to feel pissed off about it.

palerider · 27/08/2017 23:01

Maybe she's forgotten your name? I don't like it much myself, over-familiar and can come across as a bit lazy/patronising/insincere.

Sienna333 · 27/08/2017 23:03

Definitely knows my name. Yes, that's how I feel, it comes across as insincere and over familiar. I too only call my kids names like sweetheart and darling. Not fully grown adults.

My boss calls everyone sweetpea. All the time. It's incredibly irritating.

Glumglowworm · 27/08/2017 23:09

I hate it when people do it to me on the phone (I work in a call centre). It's often, though not always, people who aren't very nice who do it too.

Libitina · 27/08/2017 23:42

YADNBU

I hate it when DH uses an endearment instead of my name. I ask him if he's forgotten my name again (after 27 years together). Grrrr.....

CoughLaughFart · 27/08/2017 23:44

If you don't like it, say so. There's no AIBU here.

PuffinNose · 27/08/2017 23:51

I find it incredibly patronising personally but some people do just do it to everyone and it doesn't mean anything.

Sunshinegirls · 28/08/2017 00:02

Yanbu. I know someone who calls everyone Honey. Grates my nerves
