To consider taking 5-htp?

I've had been having some mild anxiety recently. Nothing extreme, but I worry a lot about my children's heath.
Since dd2 I have been having some thyroid issues, which have left me feeling a bit low and I struggle to sleep often. I've read about 5-htp and I think it might help, but I'm interested to hear about other people's experiences.

I found it great, slept better & definitely lifted my mood & energy. I can't remember how long it took to take effect but it wasn't immediate. I don't have any thyroid issues though so don't know if that would impact?

WombOfOnesOwn · 27/08/2017 16:44

It's made my whole life better. Do it.

grandOlejukeofYork · 27/08/2017 16:48

It's got quite a long list of potential side effects and little is known about drug interactions due to lack of research. I would be wary of taking it if you are taking other medications.

Birdsgottafly · 27/08/2017 16:58

If your anxiety is mild, then I would look at other ways of managing it.

I enquired about it to a few of my Consultants (I have health issues going on) and they all said that they wouldn't recommend it.

I'm seeing a psychologist to help with the managing being disabled and she didn't think that it is worth taking a risk with.

It isn't researched enough and the research shows that it there are too many unknowns.

Speak to a Doctor because it does have interactions and one side effect is D&V, stomach issues, which can mean that you aren't absorbing your medication.

Yanbu. It was actually recommended to me by my doctor, although I was told not to tell anyone that!

Foxysoxy01 · 27/08/2017 17:58

What about magnesium instead? From what I understand it can help with anxiety it also helps with sleep and energy levels, although I don't have firsthand experience there seems to be lots on the internet about it.

It helped my DH with his depression for a while but seemed to stop working and now he has finally seen a doctor and got proper meds. I only suggested it to him as he refused to go to the gp, but it did help a bit. Of course we won't know how he'd be feeling if he hadn't taken it, but he thinks there was some improvement.

Placemarking. The amazon reviews are amazing!

Millieja · 27/08/2017 18:31

It worked for me, and it seemed to take effect very quickly

Kforkatie · 28/08/2017 20:22

Thank you all for your opinions. It doesn't have any interactions with my medication, I'm tempted to give it a go.

I've just ordered some from amazon - I'm a terrible sleeper and sometimes struggle with anxiety so we'll see.

Schroedingerscatagain · 29/08/2017 19:18

DH and DD both take it, they both have ASD and associated anxiety. DH in particular is a real victor meldrew when not on it, it really takes the edges off him

I've been using it for about 6 months now. It's definitely lifted the dark cloud.

bara88 · 26/09/2017 11:14

it's definitely worth trying... works magic for mine!!! have a read here:
brain-feed.com/5-htp-anxiety-social-anxiety-5-htp-for-anxiety-5-htp-melatonin-5-htp-sleep/

this company is now offering free sample (till end of September) on their fb page -> brainfeed.health - that's how I've got to try it :) get in touch with them...

LadyDeLaFuente · 26/09/2017 11:52

I've been taking 200mg a day for about 4 months upon my psychologist's recommendation because I'm very up and down mood-wise, have trouble sleeping and get awful pms, among other things. Honestly, I haven't noticed any dramatic difference since taking it! But I haven't had any "crises" either so maybe it is working...

It's definitely worth a try - you have nothing to lose.
