Sorry posting for traffic!

So DS (12) was on a climbing wall while we are on a break away. He sliped a bit came away from the wall the cam crashing back onto it- if that makes sense. He cam back with hand out and he said it bent back, cried a bit put an ice pack on within 2 mins it was bruised and swollen he cant move it execept for his little finger. it mainly hurts over the scaphoid bone area so mothers instict is its possibly broken, but he does have a bit of a history of going in and its not. So hes adament hes fine and not going to hospital as also the instructor said he thinks it could just be bruised so hes sort of taken that. I know no one here has xray eyes. ive said we will wait till morning see how is but i cant just force him to go. Can i? He hates hospitals because of past problems to do with his MH diffcuilties. I dont know what to do and hate seeing him in pain. WWYD?

I'd go for ice, ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory), and a deal that if the swelling hasn't gone down a lot by first thing tomorrow then he goes to A & E. & if the swelling or pain gets worse then he needs to be sensible and tell you. & perhaps take a photo / measurements for proof! If it is broken & isn't treated till tomorrow then realistically it's not likely to do him all that much damage, though a bit of "if we go to A & E now we could stop for ice cream / chips on the way back " / " I know you don't want to go and you're probably scared, but I'm scared that you won't be able to use your hand properly if we don't get it checked out" / "humour me by going for an x-ray and there's fiver in it for you " won't go amiss...
I am of course not medically trained or anything like that, but that is what I'd do if the idea of hospital is causing much more trauma than the injury.

OP, you are the parent, he needs to see a doctor - this is non-negotiable!

If his hand is broken (and from what you've described it sounds like it is) he needs proper medical attention.

theancientmarinader · 26/08/2017 20:36

Scaphoid? Yeah it needs x raying, whether he likes it or not.
Get it done. No delaying.

Ttbb · 26/08/2017 20:42

That sounds like a fracture to me. It feels finish-I certainly didn't expect anything but still needs treatment.

lougle · 26/08/2017 20:43

Reassure him that he won't actually have to go in to the main hospital, but just to A&E/X-ray, or even better, if you can find a minor injuries department, not a hospital at all. A few hours and you'll be home again.

NewRoadToHappinessxx · 26/08/2017 20:49

So you have a walk in centre / minor injuries unit? They look like doctors rather than hospital, even if you have to drive a bit further? Or tell him you're really worried that you'll get into trouble for not taking care of him properly and say you'll call 111 and if they tell you he has to go to A&E you will need to go?

beggingbehind · 26/08/2017 20:55

No minor injuries near by, hes a sleep now with hand on pillow, if he wakes in the night we are going. I also think a sleepy 12 year old is more likely to!! I say scaphoids as hes broken it before, so can kinda recognise symptoms, both times not on x-ray when we got there to. As its very hard for someone fo that age to break it apparently! Its where the bruisng came up so suddenly to.

I think he needs an x ray to either rule out or confirm a fracture. The instructor seems a bit irresponsible tbh.

We went at 5am this morning even he admitted he was in to much pain as we thought broken they've put him in a splint to go back to fracture clinic in a few days. Thanks all I was just very tired last night
