Barky dogs not funny!!

Am I unreasonable for being irked that two near neighbours both have dogs (small "yapping" dogs, but I know its owners not dogs to hold responsible) bark and go to end of their leads if they see someone out and about,or if they are in the house (next door neighbour mostly) will bark manically if ANYONE comes near the door? We have medium/large dog who is so generally quiet, and had similar size before, and what most gets me annoyed is how people indulge little dogs being that insecure and acting out in a way that would get cold looks if a bigger dog was half that bad!!

Well it's all a bit anecdotal isn't it. I have owned two small dogs - neither of them have barked because I trained them not to bark.
I don't think bad behaviour in little dogs is 'indulged' in fact I think the opposite - little dogs get a bad press or being yappy (a term you have used in your OP) when they are no more inclined to bark than other dogs, yet people automatically assume little dogs will be yappy or snappy.

To counter your anecdotal evidence I will add my own - there are three little dogs on my street (one is mine), none of them bark or yap to any noticeable degree. There are considerably more large dogs in the street and many of them bark late at night, howl and lunge and jump at passers by. Because they have not been taught not to. My little doesn't yap or jump at people because I've put the effort in and taught him to be a well mannered little dog.

Agreed it's the owner;I do try to remember that,it's just been a long day of it today, and I may have possibly been letting off steam.
Would also say more bad owners out there than bad dogs.

I have two dogs who bark when someone comes to the door or if they are left unattended in the garden. As a consequence they don't get left alone in the garden for even 1 minute. I wish my neighbour was as thoughtful.

Well the dog thinks it's barking to scare people away, and it's proved right as they do in fact walk away! ( the dog doesn't know they were going to anyway..) so that behaviour is totally ingrained. I feel your pain as we have yipping yapping dogs near us and the owner let's them into the garden to go ballistic at everyone they see.
