To ask vapers why they want so much smoke

Mintychoc1 · 25/08/2017 11:06

I may be wrong, but I understand that the billows of white "smoke" (not actually smoke, it's steam isn't it?) produced by ecigs is optional. As in, it's not an essential part of the nicotine delivery, and has been artificially added to recreate the smoking effect. I've also been told that the volume of "smoke" can be adjusted on some ecigs.

Is this correct? And if it is, why do ecig smokers want to walk around like fire-breathing dragons, surrounded by a white fog? Ecigs seem to produce far more than actual cigarettes. I often wonder, as I see someone's face practically obscured by it, whether the ecig smokers actually want this.

Before anyone gets angry, I'm not complaining about it, it doesn't bother more, I just find it a bit strange.

There's two basic methods
Mouth to lung - uses less liquid, produces less vapour and is similar to smoking a cigarette. Generally uses a higher nicotine liquid and lower wattage
Direct to lung - uses more liquid, produces masses of vapour. Lower nicotine liquid and higher wattage

Some people quit fine on mouth to lung, some prefer direct lung. The clouds you see are likely direct lung

Luttrell · 25/08/2017 11:16

They think it makes them look cooler. Some pose with vape smoke as if they were hardcore weed smokers, but the color gives it away.

SaucyJack · 25/08/2017 11:16

Hmm. Good question. I'm sub-ohming right now as it happens.

I just like watching it drift away I guess.

MrsJayy · 25/08/2017 11:18

Fire breathing dragons Grin you would think ecig manufacturers would manage this fog my friend and dh have huge vapemachines must be the direct to lung as the clouds off them are a bit dry ice machine . I think they are as antisocial as smoking i dont mind them tbh because i used to smoke

paap1975 · 25/08/2017 11:18

We thought the car in front of us was on fire the idea day. Turned out the driver was vaping!

MissionItsPossible · 25/08/2017 11:18

I didn't know the correct term but from Ollivanders description I mainly use mouth to lung so don't have the huge billows of "smoke". When I change the tank to a bigger one that does do the huge billows I find for a second I can't see in front of me, don't know how or why people do it while they're driving!

Buckinghambae · 25/08/2017 11:20

I'm not a fan of the massive smoke clouds, I must have the former of the two.

DS's room often looks like a fog has descended. DH is less than amused, DS has quit smoking so I'll take it!

Ttbb · 25/08/2017 11:21

I didn't know this. Now it's suddenly 10 times more annoying.

Orangebird69 · 25/08/2017 11:24

My ecig is a cig-alike as opposed to a tank thingy. Pretty inconspicuous really and doesn't emit much vapour but does the job for me.

magimedi · 25/08/2017 11:25

It's called cloud chasing & there are competitions to see who can blow the biggest clouds of vapour. Daft, I think & am speaking as a vaper myself. I produce less vapour than I used to smoke with a normal cig.

Glumglowworm · 25/08/2017 11:30

I think they think it looks cool. Rather than just making them look like a tool.

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 11:32

Smoke free vapes?
Where do you get one of those?!
Note I have a basic eleaf, I produce a "normal" vapour cloud not a huge one that trails after me for 47 miles

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 25/08/2017 11:35

I had no idea about the mouth to lung/direct lung difference. I vape and I just bought one that was fairly cheap (£15), looked nice and discreet, and had cartridges that weren't a faff!

A fair bit of cloud comes off of mine, but no more than a regular cig and I honestly didn't think it made a difference. You learn something new every day!

FurryDogMother · 25/08/2017 11:40

Given that I do my vaping in the privacy of my own home, for the most part, 'looking cool' is not really a consideration. I like big clouds of vapour because I think I get better flavour that way (sub ohming), plus it's kind of fun to blow vapour rings etc. I have more discreet devices for when I'm out and about, realising that not everyone appreciates being enveloped in a cloud of steam!

I think the last time I looked 'cool' was about 40 years ago...

HerOtherHalf · 25/08/2017 11:40

Honestly, I have no idea. I've been vaping for about 8 years having previously been a heavy smoker for over 30 years. I think the excessive clouds of vapour that some people produce are completely unnecessary and do vaping massive PR damage which it can well do without.

HungerOfThePine · 25/08/2017 12:17

Just got one of those billowing cloud ones after having the wee puff ones, I prefer it but not for the clouds. Quicker and shorter puffs it's great, also the more powerful ones just seem better quality and less work.
Mine has adjustable wattage and I have it set below the reccomended level as I'm not hard-core.
It has max 12 second vape length and think I only do two seconds.

Cocolepew · 25/08/2017 12:25

Can I hijack and ask can you get a vape thingy that looks like an ordinary cigarette? I'm thinking of taking it up to vape cbd oil.

LuLuuuuuuu · 25/08/2017 12:26

Fuck Me

Smoking is wrong

Vaping is wrong

WTF are smokers or vapers meant to do ??

Unclench your uptight arses.

MrsJayy · 25/08/2017 13:29

Yes vaping shops and nicotonell do cigarettealike vapers

HoHoHoHo · 25/08/2017 13:30

Who wouldn't want to be a dragon?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/08/2017 13:37

Lu the OP didn't say it was wrong, she asked why the big clouds were a thing.

I was pondering it too. It seems somewhat daft to do if it's not an intrinsic part of the mechanism of delivery.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/08/2017 13:38

Oh, and what are people who smoke and vape meant to do? I think the end goal is stopping, for the most part, at least that's what the advertising literature leads me to believe.

HerOtherHalf · 25/08/2017 14:00

cocolepew

You can get ecigs that are the size and shape of an ordinary cigarette but they are, to put it bluntly, pretty shit. The main problem is that battery capacity is related to size, there's no way round that. So a small battery such as they have in the cigalikes run out far too quickly and don't have the capacity to support boosting voltage or wattage over the native output of a standard li-ion cell.

Cocolepew · 25/08/2017 15:00

Thank you MrsJayy and HerOtherHalf Smile
