To take DS3 to A&E

Last two nights my 3 year old son has woken up through the night screaming that his willy hurts. Took him to GP who said it looked fine and have a urology appointment in two months time. The thing is when the doctor saw him it wasn't hurting so if he wakes up through the night again tonight AIBU to take him to a&e to get it seen while he's in pain. After 2 nights of hearing him cry for hours on end I don't know what else to do.

Yes. It's not an accident or an emergency.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/08/2017 23:28

Is his foreskin tight and night errections are waking him?

I presume the GP tested for UTI?

Poor boy.

Have you tried Calpol and Nurofen, does that help?

Jezzifishie · 24/08/2017 23:29

Give 111 a call for advice?

Afreshstartplease · 24/08/2017 23:29

Well i would want a second opinion. If it continues you cant wait two months.

If hes crying for hours then yes i think id take him

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/08/2017 23:29

I'd take him back to the doctor not A and E.

TeeniefaeTroon · 24/08/2017 23:29

If he wakes in pain call 101 and ask their advice x

orangeowls · 24/08/2017 23:29

I'd call 111 and see what they advise before taking him to A&E

DD0314 · 24/08/2017 23:30

@horsesforcourses that's why I'm questioning myself. What would you do? Painkiller has done nothing.

OP posts:
TeeniefaeTroon · 24/08/2017 23:30

I meant 111

horsesforcorses · 24/08/2017 23:31

I'd take him back to the docs for an emergency appointment.

Cabininthewoods69 · 24/08/2017 23:31

Call out of hours and tell them how bad it is. And take him back to gp again and explain you cant console him and keep doing it. Our gp is amazing and woudnt pie us off

DD0314 · 24/08/2017 23:34

Thank you ladies. I'll call 111.
I have no idea about night erections although that would make sense. I do think his foreskin is a little tight and the whole thing balloons up while he's weeing which is why he's seeing the urologist. But I can't wait two months if he's crying every night. It's gut wrenching 😢

Lots of ooh doctors are situated at the hospital- ours is next to a&e and it is much better to go there with a dc in this situation as they give you an appointment rather than having to wait in a&e for potentially hours. Ring the 111 number and ask for ooh

horsesforcorses · 24/08/2017 23:37

Bless him, poor thing. I can imagine it's really hard for you.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/08/2017 23:39

Sounds like he might need to be circumcised if it's ballooning up when he wees and his foreskin is too tight. Hope you get it sorted.

Did the doctor manage to get the foreskin back to check for infection? Can you pop him in a salt bath?

GiraffesLikeToDance · 24/08/2017 23:47

Have you got the appointment through? If the number is on the letter you could call and ask for a cancellation appointment? But do go back to gp. They can get you seen urgently.

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 24/08/2017 23:48

It's easy to say no go to the doctor again it's not an emergency but when your child is in that much pain and you can't do anything to help it does feel like an emergency. If anything they will be able to get you an urgent referral rather than waiting 2 months. Would a warm bath help if it happens again?

Ohmyfuck · 24/08/2017 23:48

Call 111. He may need circumcising? Poor baby.

ImperialBlether · 24/08/2017 23:57

My son had this and had to be circumcised when he was 5.

DD0314 · 24/08/2017 23:58

I'm thinking circumcision too possibly. Thanks for the support, I don't want to over react but it really is hard. He's had a warm bath and hasn't complained of pain since. His foreskin has been pulled back the tiniest bit and it looks slightly red but I have no idea if that's just what it looks like. It's my first experience of boys. Out of hours maybe the way to go.

I would ring 111 to see a dr tonight , a GP or ANP can refer direct to paeds. If you can't get an appointment take him to A&E . Take a urine sample if possible and ensure he's topped up with calpol/neurofen. Ballooning of the foreskin while passing urine can be a perfectly normal part of the foreskin separating from the glans however as you are aware it could also be a sign of a problem particularly if there is pain (I'm a nurse consultant but see very few children these days!)

DD0314 · 24/08/2017 23:59

GP and I have both tried to get the appointment brought forward but no joy. Am now calling once a week on the chance of a cancellation.

Sorry but how is a child screaming in pain not an emergency? Take him to A&E and don't mess about.
