To ask do Oreos (in large numbers) make your Poo black?

I have to ask this question on an anonymous forum:

I am premenstrual and a bit peri menopausal. Therefore, I did the reasonable thing and ate an entire packet of mint Oreos yesterday.

Today my poo is black. Should I gather my loved ones for a final farewell or have I overimbibed on the American abomination?

For the trolls out there, yes, I AM ashamed. I have always vowed never to succumb to Oreos because they are awful but there was nothing else in the house and in the interests of public safety I ate what there was!

Ive had black poo sometimes without Oreos or dying, you'll be fine 😊

Issummeroveryet · 24/08/2017 16:04

I think I've heard that before. Also when I've drank too much blue WKD (back in the day!) that turns your poo a nice shade of green Confused

TowerOfJoyless · 24/08/2017 16:40

I think if the black poo persists you should maybe see your GP but some medicines eg high strength iron supplements can cause it (remembers this fondly from both pregnancies!).

Ginosaji · 24/08/2017 18:38

Yes they do, my dh ate two packs of the mint oreos in sucession and a couple of hours later he had the same result as you, so dont worry, totally normal

YellowLawn · 24/08/2017 18:39

yes they do

Heratnumber7 · 24/08/2017 18:45

Gin. Not doubting you but your DH has got a hell of a fast digestive system that turns food into poo in 2 hours!!

Racingraccoons · 24/08/2017 18:47

Too much iron makes your poo black. I'm not entirely sure about Oreos though as I don't eat them Grin

hamsterloverlover · 24/08/2017 18:48

Red wine always gives me black poo

sadiemm2 · 24/08/2017 19:52

As someone with IBS /IBD I have far too close a relationship with my poop... Yes, oreos can darken stools, as can those rainbow bagels and cakes, blue and purple drinks... Persistent dark stools, especially sticky and odd smelling can indicate bleeding further up the GI tract. As a one off i wouldn't worry. If it continues, see a GP Smile

No idea about Oreos, but Guinness certainly does Wink.

Dippysnowoman · 24/08/2017 20:01

And beetroot. Remembered I'd ate it before I rushed to the doctor. 😉

puppydogmummy · 24/08/2017 20:02

Yip! And beetroot turns it pink. There's great fun to be had there somewhere....

Ginosaji · 25/08/2017 02:41

@Heratnumber7 Grini know, thats was a rough guess as it was ages now & i couldn't remember exactly how long it had been before the oreos took effect Blush so i just put that, but yes, in reality it would have been longer than 2 hours, but was about a year ago it happened so hard to remember how long it took Grin

Arealhumanbeing · 25/08/2017 03:31

You can get mint Oreos?!!

I don't think any have turned my poo black. Chinese food always does though (irrelevant, unhelpful).

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 25/08/2017 03:35

And beetroot. Remembered I'd ate it before I rushed to the doctor.

Have no experience re: oreos, but OMG yes to beetroot. Don't eat tons of beetroot and then panic the next day. Grin

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 25/08/2017 04:18

You can get Birthday cake ones, pumpkin spice ones and ones with popping candy. My preference is the vanilla double stuff (cream layer is twice as thick as the regular).

LakieLady · 25/08/2017 07:47

Drinking lots of cocktails containing blue Curacao turns your poo blue.

It also robs you of your memory, so you can't remember drinking all the cocktails and you need a nice friend like me to explain this alarming event before you rush off to the GP.

TheNaze73 · 25/08/2017 08:18

As Bonnie said earlier, Guinness is the normally the chief culprit.

laurzj82 · 25/08/2017 08:35

I once had a panic after having a poo until I remembered having a massive slice of red velvet cake the day before! BlushGrin

MirabelleTree · 25/08/2017 08:38

Yes they do apparently. Friend's Mum is a Gastroenterologist somewhere else where you go more directly to the specialist and she see worried Oreo eaters fairly regularly.

acornsandnuts · 25/08/2017 08:43

Oh track a bit but my dog once ate a large box of crayons.

We had rainbow 🌈 Poo for days.

Foniks · 25/08/2017 11:42

Yes! I only eat Oreos in large numbers Blush can't have just two Oreos! And my poo is always black either the next day or the day after that whenever I eat them.

Yes the beetroot! Too many tomatoes make my toddlers poo reddish with loads of brighter red streaks in it too. I panicked so so much the first time I saw it, but looked closer and saw the streaks were tomato skin. She eats cherry tomatoes like they're sweets though, so does have a lot at one go sometimes.

Laughing at the dogs rainbow poo too haha Grin

Not one person has commented on a woman of my considerable years scoffing a whole packet of biscuits in one sitting! So much for people who say MN is judgy, lol!

To be fair, when hormonally challenged I could represent the country in the biscuit eating olympics. If only there was such a category, I could finally be an athlete!!!

Thank you all for your reassurance.

@toooldforthisshirt37 I judge you for ONLY eating one pack. Happier?

toooldforthisshirt37 · 25/08/2017 12:14

My shame is crippling. I have never eaten only one pack of biscuits at a time in my life.

I hate oreos. I am a dedicated Jaffa Cake girl I can eat them by the lorry load.

Sadly DD insists on oreos being in the house and I succumbed to them.
