AnnMeredithPerkins · 23/08/2017 19:49

So the echo is on sale today for £100 - so do I need one

Can't have a hive as our wiring is all wrong...(We can't have a smart meter...)

ImperialBlether · 23/08/2017 19:50

I'm willing to be sold this - who can give great reasons for having one?

SerfTerf · 23/08/2017 19:51

What is it?

ChangeroOfNamero · 23/08/2017 19:51

The Amazon Dot is also great and is only £50!

Amazing for shopping lists, quick reminders as they come into your head, playing the radio, finding out random facts! Bloody love Alexa.

calmanban · 23/08/2017 19:52

You dont. You just need the dot... unless your hearing is awful. You can connect the dot to a speaker. The echo is just a dot with a bigger speaker.

cheesypastatonight · 23/08/2017 19:52

Get an echo dot. Exactly the. Same but without a super speaker. It is absolutely fine, HALF THE PRICE!!
I don't notice any kind of speaker problem with it.
I ask Alexa if it's going to rain every morning!!!

BakedBeans47 · 23/08/2017 19:52

I just got one yesterday it was £90 on qvc and payable in 3 instalments of £30 so practically free!

I "forgot" to mention it to my H until it arrived yesterday. It's just a glorified speaker really but it looks nice in the kitchen.

OnionKnight · 23/08/2017 19:52

I wouldn't, it's always listening unlike the Google Home.

Unless you want Alexa to hear sex noises etc Grin

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2017 19:53

We have one. Sorry I can't help.
I said SORRY I CAN'T... oh forget it

Oysterbabe · 23/08/2017 19:53

We have the Dot, it's pretty fun. DH has replaced our light bulbs with WiFi ones too so we can ask Alexa to dim them and switch them on and off.

SerfTerf · 23/08/2017 19:53

What does it do to the central heating?

LoudestRoar · 23/08/2017 19:53

Although I like my dot, I much prefer the Google one. Quite a lot of the time, you have to ask Alexa to open apps before getting her to do things. With the Google one, you can just ask it to do things straight away.

Temporaryanonymity · 23/08/2017 19:55

I use mine a lot. I haven't found any music Alexa won't play on request, and she will keep reminders for me that I tell her. The kids like her bad jokes. I use her as an alarm clock and I am about to buy the dot for the kids to have in their bedrooms.

She does more and I have had fun telling her to play stuff on the firestick on rhe downstairs telly when I am upstairs. That confuses the children no end. When the house is rewired I am going to investigate the other options.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2017 19:55

Yes but does she do it?
Alexa turn the bedroom off
Shuffling songs by coldplay

Alexa turn the BEDROOM off
Donald trump is president of the United States....

Alexa turn the GODDAMNED BEDROOM LIGHT OFF
that's so lovely. How can I help you?

Oh fuck off
Well that's not very polite

littlemissangrypants · 23/08/2017 19:57

I love Alexa. She provides much entertainment when we go over everything the teens have said to her. Alexa does listen at all times so she sometimes gets between conversations with her " I didn't quite catch that". Alexa does however switch off if you tell her to fuck off. She gets abused a lot in our house. Kind of feel sorry for her at times.

SaucyJack · 23/08/2017 19:58

I don't think they're anything more than an expensive novelty.

Was round someone's house the other day who has an Alexa. He asked her 3 times to switch the lights on. Nothing happened- so he got up and did it himself in 4 seconds.

GetOutOfMYGarden · 23/08/2017 19:59

"DH, I really fancy an Amazon Echo and we can afford it, so let's buy one"

Personally I can't see the appeal, but maybe I just don't know enough about it!

EastMidsMummy · 23/08/2017 20:00

Waste of fucking money.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2017 20:00

She drives me to drink. But she can't open the wine

Buckinghambae · 23/08/2017 20:00

Alexa plus a solid home automation system = the ultimate in laziness. If only I could get her to mow the lawn..

FanwankTheAbsurd · 23/08/2017 20:04

Sorry, why do you need MN to 'persuade' your dh to buy something you apparently know nothing about?

You either work for Amazon and are trying to plug the product, or you're just a child and need help convincing your parents to buy you a new toy.

If you were an adult, you'd do the adult thing and properly research the tech, then decide if your household can afford it or not.

Jeez, do you need us to choose your clothes for in the morning too?

Noofly · 23/08/2017 20:04

Alexa is very funny. She is particularly funny when you are watching TV and one of the main characters has an assistant called "Alexa" and every time he speaks through his intercom thingie to ask her to do something, our Alexa gets very confused. Grin Sadly other Alexa gets fired after a few episodes for having an affair with the character's son so the entertainment is limited.

Viviennemary · 23/08/2017 20:06

I don't even know what it is. So I don't think I need one. but who knows I might.

Schroedingerscatagain · 23/08/2017 20:07

I love my Alexa

We have the main one in the living room and dots around the house, I'm always adding stuff to the shopping list, listening to music, timer when cooking no problem

As for the teenagers they do all sorts, both also use them for white noise, rain sounds etc

Loo in the night, Alexa torchlight gives 5 mins of low level light, still exploring all her uses

If you're serious look at hukd as there are multiple stores with offers on including argos with £10 voucher on spend

Apollo440 · 23/08/2017 20:07

Agree, get an Echo Dot. The speaker in the full sized Echo is pretty average. If you use it to listen to music you'd be better off pairing the dot with a bluetooth speaker.

Justmuddlingalong · 23/08/2017 20:09

I've got the dot. Handy for shopping list, weather, music. However, she chooses to ignore me frequently and so I mostly insult her, with occasional threats of violence.
