Closure of Threads

SilverySurfer · 17/08/2017 12:36

As I recall, once upon a time the only threads closed by MNHQ were by PBPs and trolls. Now it appears, especially in AIBU, that if the OPs don't get the responses they want, they throw a tantrum and MNHQ close their threads.

People spend time responding to these threads - they may not be saying what the OP wants to hear but that is the nature of AIBU and if 99.9% of replies are the same, that surely must tell them something?

I would really like MNHQ to confirm if this is now their policy because quite honestly if so, I shan't waste my time replying to some threads where it's obviously going this way.

AIBU to find it irritating?

Yes, I think there have been threads deleted for reasons which really would not have been allowed a while back.

It's MNHQ's site, and they canndecide their policy on it however they like. I always think it's better not to change things unnecessarily, unless there is an obvious and high level of demand from users. I haven't seen any calls for easier deletion of threads which do not break Talk Guidelines. Nor have I seen anything from MNHQ stating they gave changed their thinking and made a drastic change to the thresholds.

Up to them, but yes I do think they should tell us.

Yes, I've noticed it happening a lot more recently and it's very annoying.

A better tactic would be removing the poster's name if they don't want to be associated with it for a good reason - at least then it remains up.

I'd like it if the harmless troll threads were moved to a dedicated deleted thread board, some of the responses to one of last night's (clearly bollocks) deleted threads were hilarious, was a shame when it got zapped.

I don't think threads should be closed at all unless they are in breach of the Ts and Cs of the site. If the OP doesn't like the way the thread is going because some people dare to disagree with them then the OP is free to stop reading the replies and responding to them.

I understand there may be reasons for existing posts to be altered if (for example) something accidentally idenfying is posted, but otherwise they should be left as originally written. It would perhaps make people think twice before they click "post message" - then again, probably not.

Yeah I'm still Hmm that the " my boss told me a secret" thread that didn't say the thread or any information was deleted but when I was anxious and posted in the middle of the night. Giving intimate details about my family, their routines etc which was identifiable as the schedules were odd didn't get deleted! Part of the reason is because some posters had responded but more responded to the secret thread!
