Am I being irrationally judgy?

I took DD5 to the zoo today (largish one) and we went into the cafe to have lunch. It was one of those where you went up to the counter and paid for and collected your meal and then found a table.

We sat down at a table behind 4 late teenage girls with a little boy of a boy 2 with them. They didn't have any food or drinks at the table. While we were sitting there a youngish man (early 20s) who worked there (had the uniform on) came over to them, I am guessing he knew them, and brought them a Slush Puppie each. One of the girls sipped it and said "has this got vodka in" and he said yes and they all cracked up giggling (there was a fully stocked bar over to the side of the cafe, although not open). He then went off again and came back with burger meals for them all.

I just didn't feel comfortable about any of it. I felt like he was taking advantage of the girls as it was obvious that none of them were paying for the food and drink. And I'm questioning whether he has technically stolen from his employer?

Now I'm wondering if I should have found a manager and mentioned something. Or am I being a total judgy twat? I'm prepared to be flame grilled and told to mind my own...

Could he have been joking about the vodka?

ClarkWGriswold · 16/08/2017 19:44

I don't think so as one of the girls said to the one with the child "if you want to get drunk I'll watch him" Shock

How was he taking advantage if they weren't paying?

Report him? really? exactly what thrill would you get over possibly costing someone their job, income, reputation ? What do you do for shits and giggles? pick the wings off butterflies?

Seriously, you expect and internet forum to know whether he's stealing, whether its been previously agreed with his employer, whether he is in fact the son of the owner, whether is waste food (ie wrong order that was going to be thrown away) or his own lunch he gave away. Christ on a bike.

NC4now · 16/08/2017 19:47

What do you think was going on?

BabsGanoush · 16/08/2017 19:47

How was he taking advantage if they weren't paying? That they'll owe him a favour later?

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 16/08/2017 19:48

Pure conjecture from the all men are rapists crowd

x2boys · 16/08/2017 19:49

I,m not sure how he was taking advantage of the girls and seriously I,m not sure what you could do about it now anyway.

Look, you don't know if they were joking about the vodka. You don't know if they knew him. You don't know why he was giving them free food.

Basically you saw a snippet of something that you don't really know any of the facts about, then you're expecting people online to make a judgment on what you should have done.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2017 20:00

I think you have jumped to many conclusions.

littlemisssweetness · 16/08/2017 20:01

Meh you have no idea about the relationships between them, so I think you may be slightly overreacting. He also may of paid for them (or had permission to give them a free meal even) not everything has a dodgey meaning

MapMyMum · 16/08/2017 20:01

How do you know they didnt pay and he said he'd bring it over for them when it was ready? Even though thats not the set up it can happen. And even when one of them said I'll watch your ds fpr ypu if you get drunk, they could still have been being jokey. I reckon you saw teenage mum and thought the worst, and same with the man

Shoxfordian · 16/08/2017 20:02

Wouldn't late teenage be 18/19 anyway so legal to drink?

Don't think this was anything for you to involve yourself in really

LaurieFairyCake · 16/08/2017 20:03

They were about the same age though Confused
If one had a child they wouldn't be that young

It just sounds like young people banter to me - have you heard how much utter bollocks teenagers talk ?

VyvyanBasterd · 16/08/2017 20:05

What the hell? The girls could have been employees of the zoo on a day off, or one of them could have been his sister, or his girlfriend, or any one of a load of other possibilities! I think you need to mind your own business.

Brittbugs80 · 16/08/2017 20:05

So because he's male, he's plying girls with vodka slushes for favours behind the monkey enclosure later?

How do you know they hadn't ordered and paid before you got there and the drinks they wanted would be longer than normal so they were told to sit down and someone would take it to them?

PollyFlint · 16/08/2017 20:09

You don't know a single thing about this situation. You're only guessing at the ages of the people involved, you don't know if they already knew each other, you don't know if they were or weren't joking about the vodka, you don't know whether the guy in the cafe is paying for the meal out of his wages or gets a food allowance or any number of any other variables. You're jumping to SO many conclusions here that don't make a whole of lot of sense; I think you just need to mind your own beeswax (as my mum would say).

YABVVVVVVVVVVVIJ!!

broodybilly · 16/08/2017 20:33

I get exactly where your coming from OP!! No advice but I get it

Gorgosparta · 16/08/2017 20:36

So the op is

Man works in a bar served drinks.

Thats it.

CosmicPineapple · 16/08/2017 20:41

Not you problem.

Unless they were giving a vodka slushie to the toddler stay out of it.

I loved my teenage years. We snuck lots of things. It was fun and nobody was harmed. Teenagers even the good ones dont always behave.

Intothenestofvipers · 16/08/2017 20:44

So the op is Man works in a bar served drinks. Thats it.

Funny because I got that man works in a family friendly zoo cafeteria at lunchtime where the bar was closed and was sneaking vodka into slush puppies

melj1213 · 16/08/2017 21:14

So a male zoo cafe worker provided food and drinks to a small group of late teenage girls and this means he's grooming them.

YABVVU and judgey as fuck OP.

The guy could have been their friend/brother/cousin/boyfriend/co-worker and therefore he knew them well

They could have been zoo workers who were on a day off/finished a shift and so were allowed free/discounted food.

They could have been joking about the vodka, and even if not they could have been of legal drinking age.

How do you know they weren't going to pay? They could have paid before you arrived, or after you left, or they had vouchers or they were friends and the worker has a staff discount/food allowance that he was stretching to his friends or some other perfectly reasonable explanation.

PodgeBod · 16/08/2017 21:14

I think it's really off to suggest he is taking advantage of them by (possibly) giving them free food and booze. More likely to be the other way round in those circumstances, surely?
As a paying customer I would be a bit Hmm but you don't have all the facts. I wouldn't make any sort of complaint.
