I really dont get the new English national panic over the sounds of a clock tower?

AIBU to think that English national identity now so bound up in silly little things like this that renders it pointless. A land that has spawned great poets, artists, musicians, actors, science and technology instead has a panic attack about the lack of Big Ben Bongs? Why?

Because it endures.

Its called the silly season for a reason.

Also it's a great way top avoid any real news.

Living outside london i really don't see what the issue is to be honest. The clock tower needs repaired..they will switch it back on when fixed.
Also...i really don't care.

I get that there is no news so we get silly season but why then the panicked response from politicians? Are our MPs so scared of the "public" that they cannot lead and only respond, regardless of the actual issue.

Things like this are why I love this country. It's the same as when a Yoeman warmer at the tower said that they are in no way superstitious about the ravens. But they always have two sores just in case!

We (as in the UK) do well with the pyrotechnics and Big Ben's Bongs are a part of the Show, it's watched Worldwide.

I'm going down to London (from Liverpool) to see a show and the Christmas markets etc. Part of the Tourist thing, is hearing Big Ben. Four years is a long time and it will mean that some people who wanted to hear it, may never get to do so.

I think a lot of people undervalue our Landmarks/Historical buildings etc.

If it was really silly season, the end of the World would be suggested.
