To think Wayfair are taking the piss?

After spending several weeks researching nursery furniture (who knew a cot isn't just a cot? Or is it, and I'm being dragged into new baby madness?) We finally settled on a cot and chest of drawers from Wayfair. It states that they're both eligible for free delivery to the UK, but closer examination reveals that a supplementary charge applies for far flung places like NI, where I am. That's sort of fine- I'm used to it, although it's frustrating as Royal Mail charge a flat rate, but whatever; my head is mashed with trying to make decisions, and if I don't order soon, the baby will be here before the furniture.
Sign up to a Wayfair account, go through all the stages and on the very last page they add in the delivery charge.... £300! Shock Obviously I'm not going to pay that on a £500 order, but would I be unreasonable to to email them and tell them to close the account I've just opened and tell them they're a bunch of pisstakers? A quick search suggests sending it by Parcelforce would be £110, and that's for me as a non-commercial account. I can even get it sent from Italy for £70 per item!!

Sad I really liked that cot too!

That's ridiculous! Annoying as well when you've decided on something.

TheFaerieQueene · 11/08/2017 18:09

They have obviously booked a private plane for your furniture Grin

Well stop living on Pluto !

MumsOnCrack · 11/08/2017 18:09

Nope - cancel away and but from somewhere else. You could probably drive to a UK Ikea for that much!

Craicvac · 11/08/2017 18:14

Grin I know! a huge 41 miles away from Cairnryan (which has free shipping). For that price, I could take the ferry over myself with car and family, and collect it! But instead, I'll probably go to Ikea and get something for a quarter of the price.... they'll be okay with an enormous pregnant lady taking a nap in one of their beds halfway round, right?

Craic ... or go to an auction? or see if anyone has anything for sale on Ebay or local facebook? Wayfair clearly taking the proverbial, and it's so silly - they'd clearly get more customers in NI (and similar places) if they offered a reasonable delivery service - even if they held stuff at a depot before the ferry and told NIers the delivery would be a week rather than 3 days so the price was worth it for them. And put up a photo of you sleeping in Ikea if you go that route ......

I ordered something from Wayfair once. I won't be doing it again :)

implantsandaDyson · 11/08/2017 18:55

Yup, it's a pain in the absolute are. It's happened to me a few times - I live in the same far flung place Grin There was some kind of name and shame website/campaign a while ago about the same issue. Fwiw I bought an IKEA for my youngest a good few years ago, it was fab, didn't help her bloody sleep Hmm but it was grand as a cot. Go to IKEA and eat your way round it - it'll help.

Cheekichi · 11/08/2017 19:00

I feel your pain! Come and live in the Channel Islands - we also get this crap all the time with companies using expensive couriers instead of Parcelforce! They also charge VAT where it doesn't apply and call it a 'handling charge'. Hey ho, I just cancel, register a complaint and find a better company to deal with.

MadamPince · 11/08/2017 19:29

Flip me, that's the worst instance of NI shipping weirdness I've ever seen. Companies have recently gotten better and I've had rugs sent from Wayfair no problem, that is totally taking the piss.

I couldn't resist a polite but sarcastic email.

Igneococcus · 11/08/2017 19:36

I'm lucky then for the £29.95 they charge me to send a cabin bed to the Highlands&Islands. It's coming from Denmark.
That's a crazy amount of money for that.
