AIBU to expect tradespeople to communicate?

Over the past 9 months I have been renovating a property and cannot believe how bad the majority of tradespeople are in communicating. All of them come highly recommended, yet with few exceptions, their ability to let me know that they are delayed/not coming/cannot be arsed is close to zero. Carpet fitter was arranged for earlier this week. He arrived to say that wrong carpet had been delivered so couldn't do it. Arrived an hour after agreed start time to say work would have to be postponed until today. Final words to me were that he would see me at 9am Friday. He arrived at 12 today, ignoring messages I had sent, saying that carpet still hadn't arrived. When I suggested that it would have been helpful to be told this at 9am he was genuinely surprised. Have to say that if the state of this country was judged on how slapdash these people are, we are in deep doodoo. Rant over.
p/s If he thinks he is having one of my Chocolate Hobnobs when he finally brings the carpet he is sadly mistaken.
