To ask about me and beds

MrTrebus · 08/08/2017 21:54

I always break them in the end. We've had an £800 divan,a free from a friend solid oak bed and a cheap leather bed. All start with creaking and end with breaking! It's not even been from doing anything fun because it's always just on my side.

I am not THAT fat three stone of baby weight

AIBU? Is it just me?! Shouldn't beds be made better? Please recommend me a bed! Has to be super king size and less than £800.

My DH destroys beds too. We ended up buying a reinforced one that's especially designed for obese people Blush (he's not actually obese, just 6'5" tall and very dense)

It cost more than £800 though I'm afraid ...

MrTrebus · 08/08/2017 22:00

How did you find that? I might need to invest in something like that rather than replace our bed every couple of years !

Warren Evans! UK made, really thick and wide wooden slats are used which I cannot imagine to ever break, and plenty of super king size bed frames in the £500-£800 range available.
We got a super king size one from them 3 years ago and love it. We didn't get the mattress from them, just the frame.

YellowLawn · 08/08/2017 22:03

where do they break? is it the bottom falling out?
maybe you just need to tighten screws every now and then?
are you taking the term 'bedroom acrobatics' too literally?

mineofuselessinformation · 08/08/2017 22:04

Get yourself a bed with an independent frame made of metal. The surround goes around the base, so you can have whatever you want, wood, leather etc, but the support for the mattress is strong.

MrTrebus · 08/08/2017 22:08

Thanks so far but where am I finding these beds you suggest? Hit me with some links.

I really don't know what I do to them, we can be spirited in the bedroom but not that bad! The cheap one had a big wooden bit in the middle which snapped over time, the wood inside the divan also snapped and the solid wood bed just creaks so much it's beyond screw tightening!

Never had a metal bed I always thought they were creaky!

www.warrenevans.com

We have one of their wooden beds and it is super sturdy.

BewareOfTheToddler · 08/08/2017 22:13

Taurus Beds. They specialise in pine beds with slatted bases, in a variety of styles and colours/finishes.

We've had a wooden one of theirs for nearly ten years now and have just relegated it to spare bed status and bought ourselves a king. I know you said super king but to give you an idea, ours cost around £700 for bed and mattress, both at the cheaper end of their range. They will also make beds to your specification, eg extra long for tall people. Great company, great service. Would really recommend them.

MrTrebus · 08/08/2017 22:16

Thank you all

I've also found a website called reinforced beds! Can take up to 65 stone per bed some of them!

We have a king size (10 yrs) and a super king (recent) from local pine factory, the simplest slatted design they do and very solid. The super king has an extra leg in the middle.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 08/08/2017 22:21

I'm a bed wrecker too .. we bought one from Dreams recently and it's insured for 5 years, I even double checked that it covers my fat arse breaking the slats and it does!

RandomMess · 08/08/2017 22:22

Got an IKEA platform - 2 attached together to make between kin and super king. DH is 6'3" and 18 stone had it 7 years without issue

Me264 · 08/08/2017 22:27

Ours came from reinforcedbeds.co.uk! It's a divan one and it's holding up really well. The base itself wasn't so costly actually, about £400. It was the mattress that bumped the price up, so depends if you need a new one of those too.

StepAwayFromCake · 08/08/2017 22:43

I can second the metal frame design. We have a gorgeous wooden king size bed, only the wooden frame is not what actually takes most of our weight. The mattress sits on a metal frame with 5 metal legs (one in each corner, hidden by the wooden frame's legs, and one in the middle). The metal frame is attached to the wooden frame. It is solid. Dh is 6'3" of muscle, and I am 5'8" of fat, have been obese and massively pregnant, too. The bed is 11 years old, and not a single creak. I think we got it from Dreams, and the mattress from John Lewis.

The only drawback to the metal frame is that 5th leg. It makes the mattress firmer all the way down the centre. Doesn't stop any 'cuddling', though Wink. Noticeable, but not bothersome.

northdevonmummy · 08/08/2017 22:54

We had that issue, two pine frames snapped and creaky and an all metal bed that twisted beyond all recognition in the first 3 years we were married. One of the pine ones was really sturdy too! Sprung slats seem to have been the answer for us, we're on our second, choose to get a kingsize when the double mattress became uncomfortable. No problem with the double base appart from the time dh decided to drag it across the floor with the flat packed cot underneath and twisted the legs oddly, be was sorted with a screw driver in a few minutes.

HipsterHunter · 08/08/2017 23:27

Do not go for a metal base! This was THE WORSE decision I ever made bed wise many years ago. So nosiy I used to wake myself up.

Foniks · 08/08/2017 23:50

I don't know. But I loved Mr Trebus.
I didn't think anybody knew about him really haha, but might just be my age group since I was a kid/teen when he was on that show.
Anyway, you're awesome because you know him. I bet he would have had a spare reinforced bed somewhere for you.

MrTrebus · 09/08/2017 07:37

@Foniks that made me smile! He was a legend

@HipsterHunter do you mean like the reinforced beds ones or just normal metal bed frames? Thats why I've never bought a metal one as i thought they'd creak but i wake up every night now with our oak bed creaking just when we turn over and it wakes me up. So annoying.
