New job... challenging colleague

My new job is a part time job share with another woman. So far, I enjoy the job and feel quite confident considering it's a new field. The only issue I'm having is the woman I work alongside. We probably wouldn't socialise outside of work but we get on very well otherwise. She comes across a little hard faced but I find her hilarious.

She's very competitive and it's been noticed by our manager. She's told me in so many words that she feels inferior. I try to communicate clearly and show her everything and anything I learnt but it's becoming quite draining. She becomes easily distracted and makes silly mistakes and it makes me look incompetent.

I was asked a question the other day and I couldn't cover for her without implicating myself.

I mentioned an error she made and she took it really personally - I was telling her for her benefit so she didn't get in shit.

What should I do? Keep quiet and see how things go?
Or AIBU to consider voicing my concerns?
I don't want to seem like I'm causing problems.

So she is new too ?

iloveruby · 03/08/2017 20:10

Are you responsible for training her? Do you line manager her?

Blu99 · 03/08/2017 20:12

Yeah, she started just before me.

No we share the same title/position. She asks me a lot of questions about how I do things etc

You can answer her questions, that's fair enough, but you can't cover for her.
Perhaps have a chat with her and say that you enjoy working with her, value her as a colleague but ultimately you have a job to do and it's not your role to train her / cover for her.
She sounds quite insecure but that is up to your manager to deal with - not you.
