I'm moving in two weeks 2 minutes down the road.
I need to move my fridge/sofa/bed and washer.
I was quoted £100..I said will that include someone lifting the heavy items?
She said no you do the lifting.
So £100 to drive me two minutes down the road, literally 2 minutes.
What do you reckon?

It's a market economy.

If you can find someone cheaper, it's overpriced. If you can't find someone else - then it's the best available price, and probably cheaper than buying new.

You should post on her local spotted page on Facebook, asking for a man with van.

Do you have a licence yourself?

JeReviens · 01/08/2017 21:59

Piss take IMO - but she's got it and you need it so...

Have you got any other quotes?

rjay123 · 01/08/2017 22:00

*your local spotted page

MissAlligned · 01/08/2017 22:00

No lifting? WTAF

So you have to load the van then unload the van?

Clearly she's taking the piss.

If you've got to lift stuff you might as well hire your own van it'll be cheaper

Natanddogs · 01/08/2017 22:02

Not yet apparently I won't find cheaper but I'm going to try.
I won't be able to lift the heavy items alone.
I just thought she sits in van and I load it then pay her £100

This is a man with a van (well woman ) not a removal company either.

Surely you could rent a van for a day for cheaper? I hired a man with a van to collect a run for my guinea pigs 😂 He drove me there (10m away), helped me wrestle the thing into his van and then brought it round to my garden for me..took the best part of half an hour and charged me £20.

fairgame84 · 01/08/2017 22:07

YANBU
It only cost me £140 for a local removal man to move my whole house!
Man and van is around 30-40 here (S Yorks) and that includes lifting.

Doesitgoto11 · 01/08/2017 22:11

YANBU. I've just paid £500 for my entire house full of stuff to be moved 5 hours from old house to new house, giant Luton plus 2 lads over 2 days....

WeeM · 01/08/2017 22:12

I paid about £600 for removal firm to move the entire contents of my house in a huge truck (also weren't moving far) so £100 for 4 items that you need to lift yourself does seem a lot.

TyneTeas · 01/08/2017 22:18

You can hire a swb van for £25 for four hours round my way!

bimbobaggins · 01/08/2017 22:27

Was just about to say if you are doing the lifting anyway you should hire a van yourself but I see someone else already said it.
Have you tried phoning round other companies?

coddiwomple · 01/08/2017 22:31

It's ridiculous if you have to do the lifting yourself.

The length of the drive is a bit irrelevant, it's the easy bit. It doesn't make much difference if they have to drive 2 minutes or 15. (different story if you go at the other side of the country).
Is it a house? A flat? How many set of stairs? i wouldn't bother paying someone who doesn't do the lifting, hope you find someone else.

As above, even someone with a van might be happy to earn some cash helping out. Just be aware they probably won't be insured.

ImperialBlether · 01/08/2017 22:33

For £150 I got two men to take everything from my daughter's second floor flat either to her third floor bedroom at my house or to the tip!

She's taking the piss. Look up local man-and-van adverts and hire it for an hour.

SweetLuck · 01/08/2017 22:34

Well, surely you just get a couple of more quotes, and if you can get one cheaper it is over priced. If not then it is not over priced.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post links so this may get deleted but have you tried anyvan .com? You list the job then people in the area will quote back to you, and companies will have reviews too so more reassurance they are reputable.

I've used anyvan on a number of occasions and always got some good rates from the quotes.

thecatneuterer · 01/08/2017 23:07

I've also used Anyvan and got good deals.
