To wonder how a restaurant can cook without water.

There's a big water leak where I live and water supplies to the whole town and the next village along have been off since early morning.

I wondered how I would manage to make dinner then decided a sneaky midweek takeaway could be in order. I've looked on just eat and a lot of the local restaurants aren't open - understandably, there are a couple though that are. AIBU in thinking that their hygiene might not be up to scratch today?

Isn't it illegal for food preparation places not to have proper running water for hand washing ? I wouldn't want to eat there, or eat food prepared there. Especially foods like chicken..........

puddingpen · 01/08/2017 16:42

Legally they would need to have other procedures in place, but this is possible - water barrels etc. Burger vans and the like are allowed to function like this.

Daffydil · 01/08/2017 16:42

Are you in a town beginning with B?

whifflesqueak · 01/08/2017 16:43

I work in a restaurant and we've had to close when similar happened. We aren't allowed to serve food if we haven't got hot running water.

Ameliablue · 01/08/2017 16:50

They could have a water tank.

TommyandGina · 01/08/2017 17:38

We had no water for almost 2 weeks once.... We used bottle water, went pan/kettle/bucket in hand to neighbours who did have water.... would par boil water to wash hands, or use baby wipes.

It would be different for a restaurant of course....are you sure they don't have water?

OpposableThumbs2 · 01/08/2017 18:35

The water is all on in S and we have a few takeaways so get ordering.

Daffydil · 01/08/2017 19:55

B high street had water earlier when the rest of the town didn't. Think most of H is still ok.

We haven't had water since around 9pm yesterday Sad

I stink Blush

ambereeree · 01/08/2017 20:06

I'm in B. Very annoying- all the “free” bottles have run outm

TommyandGina · 01/08/2017 20:08

amber

I've got loads, if you want to venture to L you're welcome to a few 2 litre bottles (water, not gin)

Just check they are open before putting an order through with just eat or hungry house. We own a takeaway and have forgotten to switch them off during emergencies. You are so busy dealing with sending employees home/ ensuring food is kept fresh that you forget to switch them off.

user1471462428 · 01/08/2017 20:10

Oh we would close with no running water. Basic food hygiene dictates that.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/08/2017 20:10

Lots of places still have water tanks in the loft for hot water.

I would think other than handwashing lots of places could manage quite well without mains water for a day or so.

akkakk · 01/08/2017 20:11

food out of freezer
food into microwave
then onto plate

no water needed - does mean that boil in the bag is probably off the menu!

They could have there own borehole and so no need a mains water supply?

TommyandGina · 01/08/2017 22:29

Maybe, just heard my boiler fire up and have checked.

Happy to report its back on in L 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦
