AIBU?

Not to tip the fitter

Carpet getting fitted today. When I ordered the carpet, the card said they cannot give time calls. So I've been waiting in all day. I phoned the shop at 15.30 to check they definitely had me booked in, as I thought being a Friday, surely he wouldn't be working very much later. They told me then that he'd been fitting a full house today and gave me his number if I wanted to call him. Got through to him at 15.50 and he said he'd be about 30 mins max, he was already on his way from the next town. He's still not here. As the shop offer free fitting, I thought I'd give him a tip when he's done. AIBU not to bother now? If he knew he had a full house to fit, he could have let me know it would late in the day before he got here, surely? Do people tip for this type of thing anyway? I did with the last carpet fitter.

Tip if you want, don't if you don't, but I hardly see how it's the fitters fault re the time he arrives? Surely he will be given a list of jobs by the store, in the order to do them?

Annoying you've waited in all day but that's the stores policy not to let you know what time he will be there?

You are massively overthinking this. Give him a top if you wish and don't if you don't want to. I don't think the time he turns up should make much of a difference - maybe it wasn't his fault he was held up. I don't tip carpet fitters myself.

I wouldn't tip anyway. Why would you tip someone doing their job ?

However, the timing for the day wouldn't affect that.

I'd be annoyed with the shop being unable to give you a 'clue' (even if it were on that morning) as to what time he would come. As you say, if he were doing a whole house first, in another town then it would be obvious he wasn't going to get to you this morning.

Whether that is the shop or him who needs to sort their system out is open to question - a lot of carpet fitters are self employed and not managed by the shop.

I agree with a poster above who said why should you tip him?

I also don't get why people have to be tipped when they are just doing their job.

Nobody tips me for doing mine! Confused

I probably am BU. I just think if it was me and I only had two jobs to do, knowing the first one would take me 90% of the day, I'd let the second one know.

But he's here now and he's been helpful, so I'll get over it.

I don't really know why I feel compelled to tip. I guess it's because I don't know what they're getting paid, and I'd hate to think they were getting crap money for quite a physically demanding job, maybe?
