Fish in the microwave!

(Slightly less light-hearted than my other AIBU!)

A colleague has just microwaved his fish lunch in the microwave in our open office. He doesn't work in this office and has a separate kitchen next to his office downstairs.

It stinks! We're all feeling a little green around the gills (no pun intended)

Poor lad, we've all moaned about his lunch, but why do we have to be left with the smell!

Why would he use your microwave though? Poor lad nothing! It's basic common sense and decency to consider others.

Re-heating fish in the microwave is up there with getting really drunk at the Crimbo party and telling your office foe exactly what you think of them.

DON'T DO IT!

TroysMammy · 26/07/2017 16:27

Sniff loudly and say "have you washed?" My dsis said this to me when we were teens and our DM microwaved coley for her Siamese. Cheeky cow Grin

No way should he microwave fish in a microwave that others have to use. I don't even like doing it in my own home.

I think I heard a trick where you microwave a cut up lemon to get rid of the stink.

BewareTheUndertoad · 26/07/2017 17:03

Go and microwave fish in the kitchen on his floor - kippers would be a good start.

Lemon is supposed to clean a microwave, yes, but it also goes well with fish so not sure about that one.

PotOfYoghurt · 26/07/2017 17:17

Microwaving a lemon has worked for me before. See also washing your hands with lemon juice if they stink of fish after cooking.

Completely antisocial... I'd sew prawns into his curtains in his office (other fish based items and locations can be considered!)

This is getting a bit beyond a joke now. I swear he's bringing in fish lunches just to annoy us. Angry

He used the kitchen next to his office once and the uproar meant that ALL 'stinky food' has been banned from that kitchen. There was a note from management and everything.

We've tried the jokey approach. That didn't work.

Now we've told him he needs to be a bit more considerate and he just gets really shirty. I know he must feel a bit ganged up on, but he's not even TRYING to mitigate the situation.

Move the microwave and leave it on his desk.

At my previous work place we all had an agreement not to have fish for lunch, if it meant using the microwave to prepare it (tuna salad etc all fine). The smell was absolutely awful in our tiny box room staff room, and if someone used the microwave after their food smelt 'fishy'.
Occasionally we had to use agency staff, and would get the same woman often who brought fish in for lunch. We told her that we don't use the microwave to heat up fish, and explained why, but she would rush up before everyone else and use it. Many people would end up discarding their microwave meals, and head to the shops for lunch if not just to get away from the smell.

Why don't you ask him to throughly clean the microwave after he has used it? Explain that the smell lingers in the room, and on people's food, which is off putting. If not maybe you need a note from management to ban smelly foods from your kitchen too.

Omg! We had a doctor who would come to our ( separate) ward just to make his sodding fish dinner! It stank for hours. I feel your pain. We told him to bog off after we cottoned on to his plan. His own ward staff had already done this hence why he was coming to us....
