Fruit by the roadside

AIBU to wonder who the hell stops their car on a dual carriageway to buy some dodgy punnets of fruit from a stranger?

On a dual carriageway or by the side of it?

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 25/07/2017 19:24

Lots! Especially in Cornwall. Potatoes, veg, fruit - all fresh from the fields. Cheapest place you'll ever get it and the freshest too!

TeaBelle · 25/07/2017 19:24

Yeah, several times a week. Fruit is always lush.

RockyTop · 25/07/2017 19:25

It's cheap, fresh and delicious! Why wouldn't you?

TulipsInAJug · 25/07/2017 19:26

Yep, get strawberries, potatoes and eggs like this. The best potatoes in the country are sold in this way.

PinkHeart5911 · 25/07/2017 19:26

Normally fruit sellers are in acceptable places for people to stop and it's not always dodgy fruit and why does it matter it's a stranger, I mean I don't know the lady that served me in the supermarket either.

SealSong · 25/07/2017 19:28

Fruit from a stranger? Do you usually know the people you buy fruit from OP?

I fail to see any difference between a roadside fruit stall and one on a market, for example. All totally normal.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/07/2017 19:29

The best apples I've EVER eaten were from outside someone's house, they were unbelievable.

SealSong · 25/07/2017 19:29

The best honey I ever bought was from a little old lady sat selling a few jars by the side of a country road in Greece one time. All home produced and amazing.

stumblymonkeyagain · 25/07/2017 19:29

It's pretty normal in the country. Why do you think it's weird?

How is it different to buying from a farmer's market?

I wish people sold fruit like this where I live.
I'm guessing the OP is the sort of person who would but shrink-wrapped bananas from the supermarket.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 25/07/2017 19:32

I never buy fruit from the roadside because there's never a toilet near by so I always imagine the venders peeing in the bush and not washing their hands Blush

plominoagain · 25/07/2017 19:32

Me , all the time . Our most popular one is by a lay by off a dual carriageway and it's been there for over thirty years . They grow almost everything they sell , and at least I know a) where my fruit and veg has come from , and b) that my money is going entirely into their pockets , instead of 97% going into one of the big six supermarkets . I've shopped there so long , that they are no longer strangers .

NameWithChange · 25/07/2017 19:32

Ha sorry not directly on it - by the side of it!

OP posts:
NameWithChange · 25/07/2017 19:34

Ah, me thinks living in the county or being in Cornwall I wouldn't think twice. It's the city fruit that I guess I felt a bit odd about. Sorry hadn't considered locations!

We have a local flower seller with a container on our dual carriageway, been there years. Very profitable.

I had a glut of plums last year, bagged them up and left them at the top of the drive, they went in a couple of hours.

Groupie123 · 25/07/2017 19:35

Sensible people. Price is usually a quarter of what you pay in the shop. Get all my summer fruit by the roadside & freeze it.

OuchLegoHurts · 25/07/2017 19:35

In Ireland, the best Wexford strawberries are sold by the side of the road in the summer, people go crazy for them. What's wrong with it? Do you prefer plastic wrapped, mass produced stuff from the supermarkets??

NameWithChange · 25/07/2017 19:37

I don't mind outside houses, I have been known to do likewise with our bumper crop of plums, or proper stalls by the roadside, I especially would like to support local produce. I think I just saw some dodgy looking guys in the City last week and wondered where it had come from.

OP posts:
NameWithChange · 25/07/2017 19:37

I definitely don't prefer the shrink wrapped supermarket variety. All points taken. I will be braver with the roadside men.

AfunaMbatata · 25/07/2017 19:40

You get roadside roasted field mouse in some countries Envy

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 25/07/2017 19:41

Thanks OP, you've reminded me I need to go check out our local roadside seller - best runner beans ever!

implantsandaDyson · 25/07/2017 19:43

We used to have a fruit man set a stall up right in the middle of our estate when I was growing up. He used to do a tour over the neighbouring estates on different days & then on a Sun he used to sell on the side of a busy dual carriageway. He was dodgy as hell but his fruit wasn't Grin A rake of plums with a side order of 5 cigarettes I think was his big seller.

ptumbi · 25/07/2017 19:59

I'd be concerned about exhaust deposits, I think.

Not from suburban roads, but def dual carriageways.
